He is asleep, though lightly. The lingering paranoia, the fear haven't left- especially when something went wrong earlier today, when he had a pain in his side they couldn't explain, and they had to keep him here another night, maybe more.

Chuck, for all that He was and isn't, is afraid to sleep too soundly, and reluctant to dream.

Lucifer steps closer, absolutely silent, and tries to sink into the prophet's mind. This isn't something he has ever tried to do before; he's well aware there are things there he doesn't want to face.

But he needs to know. He needs to see how, exactly, Chuck has become so good at pretending to give a real damn--so skilled that even Lucifer couldn't spot the lie until Chuck dropped the lighter.

Something, though nobody may ever know what, rouses him and he jolts hard enough to make him curse loudly from the searing pain in his ribs. "Son of a what the f-"

He stops dead and swallows. Hard. Around the nasal intubation, it hurts. "Um. Lucifer. What are you doing here?"

Stupid question. He's here to finish what he started, and make sure Chuck and everybody else knows never, ever to do that to him again. Maybe Jinx is right. Maybe his death would void the deal. Fuck, that's smart of him.

It would be a lie to say it hasn't occurred to him. Lucifer isn't smiling, for once, just staring coldly at him.
