[To say Raphael looks uncomfortable is an understatement. Not only is the music here absolutely dreadful, pounding in his ears with no sense of melody, but he's getting the feeling that he is the only one whose fine 16th century-style jacket is authentic and not just some cheap imitation.

Why did he come here? Well... perhaps because he wanted to see what the place was like. He was still quite new at accepting this "vampire" label applied to him. Perhaps this place would have something to offer him.

More importantly, though, perhaps it would give Amy a chance to speak to people who would accept her. He stands off to the side of the room, uneasy, but watching her like a hawk.]

[She's only seen him once before but it's not like her to forget a face. She's been looking for Amy tonight, hoping that she's been doing well and that this place will give her a new outlet to be herself.

She didn't expect to see her father there. They were probably thinking along the same lines.]

How's she doing?

Madamoiselle Mayer. [He greets her rather curtly.]

It's hard to say. It takes her a while to feel comfortable anywhere.

Mr. Sorel.

[She gives him a faint dip of her head out of respect and then she turns her eyes back to the crowds.]

This place is too crowded, anyway. I hope that doesn't bother her too much.

It has been just the two of us since she was still small. [He turns back to the crowd.] I am sure many people don't bother her, though.

[She looks back at him.]

Why's that?

Amy grew up on the streets in Rouen.

[He reaches up to adjust his cravat.]

I do not know much about her life then, but she was likely scrounging crowded streets every day, just to survive.

Rouen? Where is that?

[She frowns and looks back out to the crowd, searching for the red haired girl.]

...That's terrible. I had no idea.

The French Empire, or France, as I believe it is now called.

[He is stoic, simply nodding at her acknowledgment.]

I do not doubt that Amy has more survival instincts than even I do, with a childhood like that.

I've never been there, personally...but that just makes her all the more admirable to have survived all of that.

Indeed.

My life has been charmed in comparison. That is all the more reason why she deserves the best now that I can give it to her.

You're a good father, Mr. Sorel. I know she appreciates all you do.

[He smiles vaguely at that.] I thank you, Mlle. Mayer. I merely do my best.
