Summary: There was a bit of a break-up after Merlin revealed his magic to Arthur--but all of that is going to have to be set aside so they can team up to stop a Darkness monster from eating Arthur. So, really, business as usual, except

[After Arthur had stormed out, after Kurt had comforted him, after Merlin had stumbled back to an apartment that seemed empty and dark, after he had fallen into a restless sleep that offered no comfort--

--life went on. He resumes his usual routine, trying not to think about the fact that somewhere in the city was Arthur-- but of course that's impossible. He can't live without Arthur, in a way that has nothing to do with friendship and everything to do with destiny. He is Arthur's other half, the yin to his yang, the night to his day. They are two sides of the same coin, and Merlin will do whatever it takes in order to ensure Arthur is both safe and sound.

Which is why he's been watching him from a distance at night. During the day Arthur can handle himself-- no one can beat him, as Merlin knows too well-- but at night there are creatures the likes of which neither of them have ever encountered. Creatures that need to be defeated by sorcery, not swords.

He had been watching from across the street, safely hidden by an illusion charm-- but now that he sees Arthur in trouble, he rushes forward.]

[Without thinking, Merlin raises a hand. Fire emerges from nowhere, setting the dog aflame. It yowls in pain and releases Arthur, rounding on Merlin instead.]
