He had been avoiding seeing most of the others for a few days now. He was exhausted and still recovering from his fight with Xehanort and even from his argument with Terra. Everyone else had other things to worry about, too, and it had been easy to slip under the radar. Roxas was worried about Xion, Joe about Naminé's disappearance, Sora about Ven... Everyone had things to do and he stood back to watch their little group come back together, slowly but surely.

This ordeal had been their greatest yet. He could see the strain on their group, how they tried to collect themselves and make the best of what happened to all of them. Riku wished he could quiet his worry while he kept an eye on his friends, but this might be something even they couldn't come back from. Too much had happened. They had lost so much this time ( ... )

When the sound of the knock on the door broke through the quiet, Xion jumped and sat bolt upright and stared, her grip tightening on Winner until the little cat yowled and squirmed out of her grip and sat on the arm of the sofa glowering at her.

Then Riku spoke, and Xion slipped off the sofa and padded towards the door to let him in, stopping only to look through the peephole to check that it really was him and not- well.

"Riku, hi. Come in," she said stepping back to let him in and smiling a welcoming smile that didn't quite manage to lighten her eyes the way it usually would have. "How are you?"

She was being cautious by looking at him through the peephole. While he was proud of her - no one else really thinks to be careful like that - he also recognized it as a sign of her discomfort. Maybe it was any stranger. Maybe it was because it was him. But he said nothing of the sort as he stepped in, half-smiling.

He hadn't been in this apartment in a long time, he realized. Since before Axel left. It felt oddly nostalgic to him.

"Hey. I'm doing okay. What about you?" Winner brushed up against his leg and he stooped to pick her up. "Hey, cat." He stroked her gently.

"Oh I'm fine," she said, deliberately avoiding eye contact as she instead focused on stroking Winner in Riku's arms. "I bet I'll even be ready to go back to work soon. The boys are worried about me and Roxas is giving me time off but I'm fine."

Her tone was cheerful, too cheerful really. She closed the door behind Riku, making sure to lock it- a pointless exercise really, because since when had any of her enemies ever had to worry about something as trivial as a deadlock?- and went back to the couch to rearrange the cushions.

"I'm fine," she repeated. "Do you want something to drink? Or a snack?"
