"I don't know that you ever told me directly, but I do listen over the network, and I'm capable of logic." He tried to banish the concern from his expression, but...That prior pleasantry, that charisma, that levity was sliding away from Wayne's face. Instead of confident, he just looked tired and a bit sad. Edgeworth set his tea down, seized suddenly with uncertainty and a degree of guilt that he'd just assumed before that Wayne was in good spirits.

"You know Dent well; Dent is known to the Joker and to others, which means also that you're from the city of Batman and the rest." He gestured slightly. "And I've heard of your city and of its corruption. But an atmosphere of criminality - of darkness, if you will forgive me the crude parallelism to our own circumstances - will often discourage good people from acting, particularly if there are no positive examples to follow. After all, if one has no hope, one has no reason to act.

"And, more to the point, good people will often expect others to step forward - like the paralysis at the scene of a car accident, with everyone expecting someone else to call 911." He crossed his arms. "So what, precisely, prompted you to make that call - to devote your talents - rather than trusting that others would assist the police, would help to feed the poor?"
