The dinner invitation had come as somewhat of a surprise to Franziska, despite her previous arrangements with Jack - being unemployed was a lifestyle change that took more acclimatisation than she had previously thought, and the development of her new powers had mainly hindered, not helped, the transition as it had taken place. In that time, she’d almost tried to forget about Sirius Black - well, not forget him entirely, but instead not waste too much unnecessary time thinking about him, because she was almost (and it was the lack of complete, utter certainty that was distracting her more than anything else, now) sure that he would not be doing the same ( ... )

Leaning against the fire hydrant that marked the place where their house was hidden, Jack waited, looking quite tense as he did. Though it had been his idea in the first place for Franziska to come to dinner, he was rather regretting the decision; things were too tense politically for him to be at ease with Franziska travelling out and about without a good reason ( ... )

No, he really was going to die. Sirius had come to that conclusion. The indignity of it was rather irritating, but Jack would put something lovely and appropriate on his tombstone--there was some brief worry that he would put some rude phrase on it, but no, no, that wasn't Jack's style. Jack was a good best mate, respectful at the right times. It would be a touching ceremony--eulogies from the best of them--and Franziska would wear black gloves--

Shit, he'd stepped on his own foot again. The pain was surprisingly sharp, given that he was on his death bed. Or, well, not bed, he was still standing, hopelessly tangled in the snarl of velvet drapery. If only he hadn't been arrogant and decided to fix the curtains in place with magic. They would have fallen by now, if they were done up in the Muggle way--the rings would have pulled free and he would be equally free, breathing good clean air ( ... )

When Franziska noticed Jack was already standing in the street, she felt a little more hopeful -- today, at the very least, would start off on the right food, and it seemed that he had made a concentrated effort not to irritate her unnecessarily. She had opened her mouth to return his greeting but immediately snapped it shut again as he had resumed his movements, wondering where he was going to lead her to, because there wasn't anything here --

-- or at least, there hadn't been several moments ago, and she forced down her initial reaction to what was happening in front of her until it appeared to be over. Then she wondered why she was even surprised -- this was Siren's Port, after all, far stranger things had happened then buildings magically (hah, magically) appearing where they hadn't been before. She schooled her features into passive neutrality and unclenched her hands from fists she didn't remember forming.

"Impressive." With that being said, she followed him.

"Course it is," he replied over his shoulder. Despite his nervousness, he couldn't help being a bit smug; it was his home, after all, even if it wasn't his magic that had made it so impressive.

"Here it is," he added, turning to face Franziska. He spread his arms, taking in the main living room: the two beds on the floor, the clothes pushed together into neat piles (just for her!), the dog toys lying scattered around the room-- and, Jack noticed with surprise, the curtains. They'd never had curtains before, let alone ones that appeared to be struggling.

"Sirius?" he called, and stepped forward, ready to poke the curtains.
