Francis had been alerted to the picnic and had been excited ever since he started making the preparations. He'd been less excited when Liquid had mentioned another person coming along, but-- well. That was all in the past. At least he got to spend time with Liquid regardless. Thankfully he had grabbed all the ingredients that needed to be fresh early in the morning, to have time to work on the picnic basket. And yes, Francis had brought an entire basket full of goods for them to eat for the whole picnic, as well as a blanket for them all to sit on.

As they came towards the clearing, Francis tried to start up a conversation. "So who is this friend of yours? What is she like?" Suddenly, Liquid stopped moving, and Francis naturally halted too, turning his head to see what Liquid was looking at. In front of them was a beautiful woman and- oh god, what was that thing in her lap?! Francis immediately reached out for Liquid's arm and clung to it tightly, his expression turning to one of pure horror.

(( ooc: Just assume any picnic dishes are fair game, especially little veggie sandwich treats! o/ All carrots and radishes are out, as per Liquid's instructions. As for drinks, he brought juice. there's also wine underneath the towel in the basket, for him, but he brought three glasses just in case ))

Amalthea appeared to be giving the squirrel her full attention, with the squirrel gabbing away. It stopped short when she lifted her head to look towards the approaching pair, but Amalthea made no move to rise until the squirrel bounded off of her knee and scampered up the tree.

The spiderdog's eyes opened - yes, all of them - and peered at the newcomers. It recognized Liquid of course, but not the other. Reluctantly, however, he lifted his head so that Amalthea could get to her feet.

"Lord Jormungandr. I welcome you, and your companion." Her gaze alighted briefly on France. She knew the look of fear, and there was only one logical reason for it. "Do not be afraid. You will come to no harm in this place, while I am here."

"Amalthea. How is your friend? Recovering?" Liquid asked casually, setting the bag down on a rock. He was careful not to trample any flowers or anything similar as he approached to stop less than a foot away. "This is Francis," he remarked, gesturing to the man standing nearby. "Francis, this is Amalthea. And I don't think her friend has a name... does he?"

Francis also treaded lightly on the ground, but not because he was necessarily trying to avoid flowers or insects; instead, it was because he didn't want to upset the very large... thing next to Liquid's friend. He looked up to smile at Amalthea, briefly, before turning his attention right back to the creature. "Ah, are you sure about that, mademoiselle?" His grip on Liquid's arm tightened.

She nods once at Liquid, appreciative that he and his companion at least were taking care not to tromp all over everything. "Yes. Now that the ... 'bullet' as you called it, is no longer within his body, I was able to heal his injuries. And no, he has not yet chosen a name."

Glancing at Francis, she blinks once, giving the slightest shake of her head.
"I am not capable of deceit. Were I unsure as to his intentions in your presence, I would say as much." In other words, yes, she's sure.

Liquid glanced over at Francis, amused. "Do not fear. Neither of us will allow you to be hurt," he teased playfully. Despite his words, his hand moved lightly to rest on Francis' back for a moment, reassuringly, before dropping back to his side.

"It's beautiful out here today," he mused, seemingly unfazed by the giant spider beast. But then, he had been the one who had removed the bullet from within it. He had little fear of it; more a grudging type of respect. It was a remarkable creature.

"... merci, mes amis." Francis gave a quiet nod at Amalthea's words, though he found it odd for the woman to be so verbose, and took a little comfort at the hand that rested gently on his back, just for a while. At least they were calm about it all, which made him relax even a little. After a moment, he shuffled the basket around a bit, and placed it on a nearby rock, beginning to dig through and set up the picnic. He did occasionally keep one eye on the spider dog, though, just to make sure.

"It will remain so for only a short time. I can yet smell the coming of rain in the air. We should take advantage of such weather while given the opportunity."

She patted the spiderdog on the head, and waited in the clearing, watching the pair start to set up their little picnic. She didn't really plan on partaking of their food, not when there was a perfectly good berry bush over there.

"That was the purpose of coming out today, wasn't it?" he asked playfully, sinking down to sit on the ground. He idly tugged three plates out of the bag, offering one to Amalthea. After all, he didn't know what she was eating.

Thoughtlessly, he stilled, tilting his head back to stare up at the sky. He fell silent for a moment.

Francis spread out the sheet he had brought to use for the picnic on the ground, making sure there would be enough room for everyone around it to sit. Then he started sorting out the various foods to place in the middle, looking over at Liquid and smiling a moment. "Is there anything in particular you'd like to eat, cher? And you, mademoiselle Amalthea?"

Amalthea reached out to pluck a small branch from the bush nearby, then padded over and knelt a respectful distance from the two - not wanting to draw too close, since the spiderdog was staying close to her today. He rested his head in her lap the moment she was settled again. "I suppose." She mused in a matter-of-fact tone, because she had no sense of humor. Curiously watching Liquid in his moment of repose, she turned to Frances to consider his question.

"I thank you, but I am content with this." She held up the small branch with a few berries on it. "However, should you have in your possession a meal with meat, I believe he would welcome it." The 'he' being her ward, of course.

Liquid shook his head carelessly, his hair cascading around his face. He'd debated tying it back today, but why bother? It wasn't going to be worse than a mild inconvenience with the wind. Without thinking, he lay back lightly on the grass to stare up at the clouds. "I'm not particularly fussy. The plates are here if you want them."

Absently, he tugged off one of his gloves and dropped it into his inventory pocket. "Are you going to be alright with just berries, Amalthea?" he asked, curiousity tinting his voice. Casually he reached out a hand and plucked a sandwich from Francis' stockpile of food. Odd. How long had it been since he'd taken a moment to just relax?

Francis was taken aback that Amalthea would choose to eat wild berries at a picnic. "It's quite all right, you... can eat some of what I've made... I permit you to. I made plenty for everyone, after all." He motioned to some of the food laid out, many of which was edible by a herbivorous creature - vegetables were the easiest to make and pack and eat at a picnic, after all. She mentioned feeding the spiderdog, and after he tensed a little, he opened up one of the sandwiches with roast beef cuts on the inside, taking the bread off, and using Amalthea's plate to gently offer the spiderdog some meat, trying his best to smile.

Once he had gotten it close enough for the spiderdog to act on it, he pulled away, and turned to look at Liquid. Oh, god, he had a sandwich. Was he going to...?

She nodded once at Liquid. "My diet has always consisted of such things." This may as well be her saying 'yes I'm fine' but - well she supposed it would be rude now, especially with Francis urging her to eat some of the food he prepared.

"Your generosity is most kind." She murmured, accepting one of the sammiches. Cucumbers, yum! She hadn't had those in a long while.

The spiderdog eyed Francis carefully as the meat was offered, and then looked at Amalthea. She paused mid bite of a cucumber, "You may eat as well. It is not poisoned." She'd know. With this reassurance, the animal rose and snapped up the food, retreating again with it. Amalthea, on the other hand, was perplexed by the look Francis was giving Liquid.

"Does something trouble you, sir?"

"It might almost be poison to her, Francis," he chided. "If she's eaten things like berries all of this time, eating processed food and the like might not agree with her body. Be careful what you offer her. Natural things are better."

Idly, he brought the sandwich to his lips. The scent of the bread and the cucumber was a pleasant one. He hadn't eaten sandwiches for a while. He flicked his tongue out idly to worry a piece of cucumber free. He tasted it, felt the juices hit his tongue with a pleased sigh, before biting into it. Sorry, Francis. He wasn't going to draw this one out.

He turned to Amalthea with a smile. "De rien. Take as much as you'd like. There's plenty of food for everyone, even your..." He couldn't help but grimace, though he tried to keep smiling, as the beast snatched up the meat and began devouring it. "... companion."

Then Francis turned to Liquid, amused at how scolding his tone was. He returned with a nonchalant pattern of speech, as he took two sandwiches and delicately placed them on his own plate. "I agree, natural things are better. Hence why I use them in my cooking as often as humanly possible. We Frenchmen are very serious about our food. Nothing but the best will do." However, he backed off, as he didn't want "Mama Liquid" to start lecturing him again.

Distracted as he was with Liquid, he didn't realize Amalthea had spoken to him until a few moments later. "Oh, non, nothing is troubling me." Seeing as he wasn't going to get any sort of show from Liquid, he simply relaxed, enjoying the sun on his skin, and took a bite of his sandwich. He licked off the few little crumbs left behind on his lips, and swallowed, slowly. How long had it been since he'd been out and about? Far too long. Absently, his free hand reached for one of the wine glasses, pulling it out, and then the wine bottle itself.
