Juliet, the dice was loaded from the start, and I bet, and you exploded in my heart. )
For all that his presence was practically invisible to most in Siren's Port, news of Yaha's capture and the circumstances involved hadn't been long in reaching his ears. Black Mask was on the run now, too, and though they did have a favorable rapport, it was the kind of mess he would sooner leave to the other man than help him clean it up.
And then there was Light, his sometime target, now employer -- everything seemed to be coming apart at once. Why else would he call the man he at one point threatened to turn in?
Waiting patiently, keep a weather eye on the lookout for anything suspicious, Slade mostly kept out of sight. He'd grown less fond of day job over the years, preferring to work in uniform, but this was not one of those times. Instead, he wore a disguise, keeping it casual so as not to draw attention. The eyepatch, he knew, had a tendency to draw some stares ( ... )

"This is a good look for you, though if you mind my saying a lot less imposing. Do you follow everyone around in the guise of an out of work banker?"
It'd certainly explain how up to date he seemed to be, how on top of things.
"Let's get out of here. Edgeworth has eyes everywhere."
Even if the paranoia was a little much, it couldn't help to be careful. If Shikamaru and the other ninja were really empowered against him, then he'd need Slade with him right now, at least until they were back among people. The AGI students at the university would protect one of their own back on campus.

As in, the full regalia of guns, blades, staff, armor, and other miscellaneous tools of the trade. This was a low-key job in comparison to other's he'd taken in the city. He was prepared, of course; he just didn't care to have his real face associated with Light's. Not at this juncture.
"After you."

Of course after him--whether it was to keep an eye on him or watch his back didn't really matter, Light confidently led the way regardless, heading down the stairs. they would go in silence for a while, at lest until Light was confident they were alone, or couldn't be heard amongst people.
"Do you see anyone following us?"

Tilting his head slightly at the question, he glanced about surreptitiously (not for the first time) -- still nothing that he could see. Or hear, for that matter, which was just as well.
"I'd hear them before I saw them." His way of saying 'no', but in case it wasn't clear enough: "We're alone."

"Edgeworth and I are on the same side, but he's determined to despise me. Do you ever have nightmares?" He looked back up at the other man briefly. "I've been helping a friend sleep, but good deeds never go unpunished. And if the cost of sleeping solidly is a little information, is that really too much to ask?"
He was just a little impatient with the whole thing. He'd been sure Shikamaru was under his control, but now he doubted it. And self-doubt was a dangerous thing when playing with fire the way he did.

"Rarely." In answer to the first question. Honest, without giving much away. As for the second: "It depends on the information."

He shook his head. It seemed so clear to him, so why not to anyone else?
"I plucked at a few things about AGi too, while I was at it. But he didn't know anything useful. Seems like a wasted effort, essentially, with a side order of goodie-two-shoes distrust while I'm at it." His plans never fell through, and this was a set back that he really couldn't stomach.

Like Light said, though -- good deeds never went unpunished. Too bad Light's motivations weren't really selfless.
"It happens."
He'd lost count of how many times do-gooders had vomited their high ideals at him. It was sickening.

He lowered his eyes, humming to himself. It was a good idea, but it had fallen through. And now? His worries had to be dealt with personally. That meant a different kind of danger; a different kind of threat, and it meant using his powers differently too.
"You're from Gotham, aren't you?"
Reply
"I'm not a native." Thank the powers that be for that. "But I've been there."

It was important to ask the right sort of questions, and questions about how powerful his enemies were? Crucial.

"I wouldn't call it 'worse'." Gotham didn't have undead creatures roaming the streets at night, after all. Or at least, not an a regular basis. "They reek of the same problems." Filth, corruption, decay...monsters. "They just take different forms."
Reply
"And how are you adapting to 'the same but different'?"
Reply
"Well enough."
A vague answer, but a true one. Bounty hunting wasn't exactly his favorite thing, but it was as close as he could get to actual mercenary work.

What he wouldn't give for L; someone who was playing a game, someone that he knew.
"Not nearly as unpredictable as Joker, though." A laugh. "You can keep that brand of crazy."
