Quite literally. Though one might argue otherwise if he was looking to regain his pride, Vanitas never saw a reason to give Ventus Junior a chance to fight back. That's why, at some point in following him home, he'd opened a portal up to a nearby rooftop and stood by silently, watching Roxas down below.
Watching, and waiting.

He couldn't forget the tone of Ahiru's voice when she'd talked him the other day. They weren't close friends, but he knew her enough to recognize the difference in her tone; it was quieter, calmer...more heartless. Did that make her a Nobody too? Or still herself, yet diminished?
Whatever had been done to her, it was wrong. It shouldn't have happened and it couldn't be allowed to go on. A frontal assault on Xehanort's home was unlikely to work, though-or was it? It seemed too simple. The internal debate occupied him as he walked, distracting him as his feet found the route home automatically.

At three, Void Gear burst into his hand in a light that was too far up for Roxas to notice; gravel scraped beneath his boots and his body slit through the frigid air in his descent.
At two, he lifted the Keyblade in both hands and selected his primary target to aim for: the back of Roxas' head.
At one, it'd be too late for Roxas to react.

Less than a second later, there was a crack as the dark Keyblade connected with his skull. But Roxas barely felt it; he sank into an immediate darkness as unconsciousness took him and his body dropped to the pavement.
