With the attack in full retreat, it was time for Samus to be following suite. The power had gone out with no warning at all, and she didn't like the sensation of dread that was starting to build in her chest. Something about the Darkness was different tonight, something sinister.

The cops and voids were all tucked into the Core area so it was time to make her withdrawal, moving through the dugouts towards...hey was that...Snake?

Drawing the Paralyzer she sighted along it's length, trying to dispel the dizziness Liquid's assault had left her with. Once she had a solid target, she let fly with a bolt of blue plasma.

Snake hit the ground hard and rolled with the impact, righting himself enough to kneel and bring his pistol up, aiming at the shifting black-on-black shadow that was the darkness monster as it turned to charge again.

Before it could, though, it was struck down suddenly and improbably by a flash of blue light, almost painfully bright in the pitch dark. He blinked hard to clear his vision and spun in the direction the attack had come from.

"Come on out," he ordered harshly, weapon and guard up. "Slowly." The enemy of his enemy was not always a friend.

Habit kicked in and she snapped the Paralyzer up in response...although apparently he couldn't see her. Letting it drop to one side she pulled the dark hood from her head and walked forward slowly, hands up...and an amused smirk on her face.

"You gonna cuff me Snake?"

"...Samus?" A surprise, but not, for once, a bad one. Snake tipped his head slightly and he lowered his weapon as she got closer and his eyes readjusted to the dark. He stood slowly, rolling his shoulder where the thing had gotten its claws into him.

"Guess I owe you one." He said, rechecking the ammunition of his pistol and sliding the magazine back into place with a snap.

"We can call it even since I had to tangle with your brother." She grinned at him, having developed a bit of a limp at Liquid's hands.

"How'd it go for you?"

"Liquid?" The low growl of his voice makes it pretty damn clear how he feels about Liquid right now. Roughing up his allies doesn't help his brother's case in the least. Snake caught the hitch in her step with a critical eye. Not bad for having gone a round with Liquid. (He knows what that's like.)

"...weird girl with a gun." He answered, not bothering to get into detail until they were out of the open. "Chased her off before she was able to cause much trouble."

Not without a GSW or two of his own, quickly wrapped tightly enough to slow the bleeding but not so much that his movement was further restricted. Not bad, but a pain in the ass when you're looking to make a rapid getaway. Snake frowned into the dark streets before seeming to settle on a direction.

"No use sticking around. You coming?"

"Damn right. I'm not going to hang around here any longer." She eyes his gait critically as she draws up alongside him. "Looks like you got a little return fire on you there."

Luckily, Snake happened to live in this sector, so they didn't have to go far. He took the lead, sticking to the sides of the buildings for cover. Always preferred working alone, but there was still something a little reassuring about having someone there to watch your back.

"Had worse." He said gruffly, without turning around. Which had little to do with anything besides his attempt to brush it off as best he could. "She got lucky."

As if to undercut that statement, the last part was punctuated by a hiss of pain as he put too much pressure in the wrong spot when he moved. Or maybe he was getting too damn old for this.

"Yeah so have we both. Doesn't make it any less bad for the moment." Sliding up beside him she offers a shoulder, swapping the Paralyzer to a different grip.

"We'll make better time this way...unless you feel like being carried by my Varia Suit." Mostly she'd held off to spare Snake's pride, she knew -she- didn't care for being carried.

And Snake's pride thanks you for that, Samus. Still took him a second once he caught on before pragmatism won out over pride and he accepted the support; putting just enough of his weight on her to allow them to travel a little quicker.

"...You know, sometimes you remind me of someone," he ground out as they moved, pausing as the sound of nearby scuffling turned out to be a bolting stray cat instead of a deadly monster. Hadn't seen Meryl in years; not since he'd up and walked out on her after a rocky six months. Still, he hoped she was doing alright for herself.

"Same smart mouth."

"It's part of my charm." She quipped back with a wide grin, her weapon coming up fast to track...the cat. It dropped back down to her side as they continued to move. "My commanding officer loved it too."

Not that Snake and Adam were much alike really...well, maybe superficially. Snake was more grounded, down to Earth and less likely to glare and bark about her more...reckless endeavors. And Adam had always called her Lady, 'Lady Samus' this and 'Lady Samus' that...she'd never decided if she hated it or not.

For as careful and methodical an agent he was, Snake had a fairly loose definition of reckless behavior.

He grunts an answer. Yeah, same smart mouth. And it was a tough act to follow, but her ass wasn't bad either.

"Your CO?" He repeated, mostly out of habit. Followed by a muffled curse as he stumbled on something in the dark and was forced to lean a little more heavily into her. So much for his pride. Sacrificing stealth for speed, so they were making good time. But all these streets looked the same at night without the benefit of electricity.

"Yeah. Adam Malkovich. He was my CO when I was still working with the Federation...before they stabbed me in the back." They'd talked about it before, but that didn't stop Samus from being bitter.

She accepted the extra weight without complaint, adjusting her grip to better support him as they moved. In truth, Samus was pretty impressed, most people had trouble staying upright with a gunshot wound to the leg, never mind moving at a decent pace.

Snakes aren't "most people," for better or for worse. He wasn't superhuman, but he was made to withstand pain and take damage. He'd be laid up for a while afterward, but nothing short of FOXDIE would stop him when he set his mind to it. Still hurt, though. Wasn't long before the effort had him in a cold sweat.

"He betrayed you?" He asked, nodding his head toward a block of small buildings. This way. Not really one for jumping to conclusions, but. His own experience hasn't taught him to expect much else.

"No...Adam was gone before the Federation turned on me." At least...that's what she wanted to tell herself. How long had they been trying to weaponize the Metroids like the Space Pirates had? Had Adam known all along? Had she just been a pawn from day one?

"I discovered later that when a high-ranking member of the Federation officer corp dies, if they're particularly skilled then their minds are transferred into a computer."

A human mind in a cybernetic body of sorts? Again, a little too familiar.

"Transferred?" Snake echoed, slightly unnerved, "...Sure it's not just an AI?" After all, it was an uncomfortable thought. And he'd seen what kind of toll something like that could take. All the better if it's a fake, like GW. He fell quiet as they snuck through the last few streets to their destination. The sound of something new growling and moving in the distance was getting steadily nearer as they reached the door. He grit his teeth and took his weight off Samus, gripping the doorframe for support as he began to unlock it.
