When the blackout initially hit, Katara had been at work. Naturally, the first person she thought of was her brother, followed by Jet. And her other friends, but primarily, her brother.

It was infinitely creepier at night, truth be told, so after sending a quick message to her brother that she was heading home, she started to sprint off. Leaving the safety of the lake and the Underground Mall to the far less safe-ness of above ground.

She didn't seem particularly concerned though - not when she had water trailing after her from the canteen. It was as she was nearing Toushirou's own staked out spot that she caught sight of - and nearly screamed at - one of the Darkness monsters. Instead there is a strangled, "WHOAH!" And then a gush of water bullet-shot forward into the beast's face, catching it mostly by surprise, and sending it skidding backwards past the shinigami.

...oh. Oops.

He whipped his attention over to the direction the cry had come from, blade raised. More of them now?

But he just blinked in surprise as the monster skidded past him before reason reasserted itself and he flicked Hyourinmaru to send a wave of ice crashing over the monster before it gained wits enough to move again. It would be a while before it could move again regardless of its will, assuming it survived being encased like that.

He lifted the unspent kidou in his hand to allow himself a look at the person who had sent the creature flying backward in the first place. A vague expression of recognition lighted on his features. He'd seen her before, some weeks ago. But he hadn't gotten her name; he would have remembered if he had.

"You're unhurt?"

Reacting in just as much surprise as the beast when the wave of ice encased the beast, Katara followed the direction it came. Oh! She too, remembered him. The water that had been hovering at her shoulder slid up her arms like a pair of water sleeves as she glanced around to make sure nothing else was coming.

"Yeah, I'm fine - thanks." A pause. "You're the one that was at that snowball fight a few weeks ago, aren't you?"

He watched the way the water slid around her. Ah, right. She had dominion over the element, didn't she? He remembered now, where he'd seen her, and couldn't help the disgruntled look at the memory.

"I was there." He hadn't meant to be. That damned idiot had pelted him with snowballs, and he'd retaliated. What the hell had been wrong with him that day? Normally, he did not stoop to such pettiness.

Regardless, he nodded in greeting. "Hitsugaya."

Hey, what was that look for? "Katara." She grinned, "I thought you looked familiar. It's nice to meet a fellow waterbend -- I mean, someone else with an affinity for water, around here."

She motioned at the darkness creature still encased, "Did you get caught out late when the blackout hit too? I was on my way home, but I can walk you to your apartment if you want."

Hitsugaya did not appreciate being reminded of one of his (rare) bouts of childishness. It wasn't anything against Katara personally; he recalled being somewhat intrigued by her power back then, but he was not the sociable sort.

He shook his head. "I was out here intentionally."

That was it, really. He didn't see the need to elaborate.

But you are --- uh, nevermind! Katara glanced around, puzzled, "Isn't it a little dangerous to be out here like that -- what were you doing out here? You weren't hunting those things were you?"

Apparently Katara didn't think 'intentionally' was a good enough excuse. Silly girl. "Is anyone else with you? I mean, other than me." Granted, he was pretty damn talented as a waterwielder, but what if he got ganged up on?

He snorted at that question. He was a shinigami captain, damn it. "I can handle myself."

He spent most nights out in the Darkness, after all. It was a requirement of his job, though he'd taken a few nights off to work out his aggressions properly and try to track down Kazuma's killer. Unfortunately, he was only having a measure of success with the former and not the latter. And the lack of success on the latter ate away at any progress he'd made with calming down.

"I'm alone." He didn't need babysitting. If he got ganged up on? He had wide-radius abilities. It would not be an issue.

Yeah yeah, well she's not going to question it. There were a lot of children in her world who were forced to learn to fight, to survive. And Toushirou was just adorable. "Okay." She still sounded a bit concerned though. "This blackout - do you think it's because of one of the darkness monsters?" She'd been busy making sure Sokka was resting, so she hadn't paid any attention to whatever news was on the NV about it.

Had he known Katara was thinking of him as adorable, he would have been highly offended. Shinigami captains were not adorable, least of all him.

He shrugged at the question. "I suppose it's possible. Though all that's been confirmed at this point is that it's city-wide. No news as to the cause seems to be available yet."

Don't worry, Katara doesn't gush over the adorable that often. That is usually reserved for babies. "But at least that means it's temporary until -- whatever happened is fixed." Ooo that mean that she had to stock up on candles - she didn't think they had too many at home.

"So ... are there a lot of waterbenders like you where you're from?"

icy_heavens February 20 2011, 03:10:29 UTC
Yes, it was likely temporary. Not that he knew the typical turnaround time for something like this to be fixed; before this, he hadn't really spent extended periods in the Living World.

He lifted an eyebrow at her terminology. "Waterbender?" Still, the context was obvious enough, even if her wording was unfamiliar. "It's not entirely uncommon for shinigami to have elemental affinities."

What the most common of those were, he could not say. He knew the zanpakutou of all of his officers, and those of many of the senior officers of other divisions, but that did not account for the majority of shinigami capable of shikai.

"Someone who holds mastery over water." All forms of liquid, really, but why quibble the details? "Sorry, I still haven't quite gotten used to using other terminology for something I still identify as waterbending. Like what you did."

She frowns a bit. "What is a shinigami...?"

He glanced casually back at the frozen monster. "I see. It's a natural part of my ability; not all shinigami can do that."

No need to mention that his mastery over water was mostly related to freezing it. Or that a mere loosing of his reiatsu could coat a wide area in a film of ice with no conscious effort on his part.

He checked a sigh as he sheathed Hyourinmaru onto his back, the scabbard forming out of surrounding water vapour. How many times had he been called upon to explain what a shinigami was since he'd been here? It got vexing after a while.

"A shinigami is a protector and guide to dead souls."

She accepted this easily enough, unaware of his annoyance at having to explain what a shinigami was. Again. "A bridge between the human world and the spirit world, then? Or at least close enough to it - we have someone like that back home, but he's called the Avatar. And - he's more of a protector - someone to maintain the peace between our world, and the world of the spirits."
