It had been weeks, and still Ryuuken could not get Isshin off his mind. In whatever capacity, the man haunted his thoughts and dreams. Of course, Ryuuken was mad at him, chiefly about the incident with Uryuu, but that did not preclude memories of that day from creeping into his psyche.

Ryuuken did not know how to feel about Isshin. He had experienced an emotion he had thought long gone while in his arms. But there was always the question of veracity. Had it all been real? Or was everything to do with the drug? There was one way to find out, but Ryuuken found himself avoiding it. He had been alone for so long he was loathe for his life to change. Yet he did not want it all to have been a lie either. And so, Ryuuken avoided the issue and the man with whom it was associated.

Except it seemed Isshin did not feel the same way. Ryuuken sensed his presence before he heard the doorbell. The only reason he answered it in the first place was that he knew Isshin was not the type to get the hint and go away. Ryuuken opened the door, ready to issue a curt dismissal and slam it in Isshin's face. The words died on his lips as he saw Isshin prostrating himself on the ground.

Ryuuken backed away instantly, leaving the door open. He retreated to the kitchen to pour himself a glass of bourbon without a word. Ryuuken would have said something, but he wasn't sure what to call him. Kurosaki? Isshin? His thoughts were as tumultuous as ever, but Ryuuken knew things would become clearer very soon. With this in mind, he poured Isshin a glass as well before going back to his living room and sitting down on the sofa. Ryuuken placed Isshin's glass on a coaster on his coffee table.

"Please forgive my errors, Ishida-sensei!" Isshin begged. "I'm very sorry for having humiliated you so!" At the lack of a door being slammed, Isshin lifted his head, hardly daring to peek. Maybe Ishida was just going to shoot him. No, not that. He'd walked away from him, disappearing into his apartment and reappearing with two glasses of some amber coloured liquid.

Isshin hesitated, then he stood up, watching Ishida as he put the second glass down. It wasn't exactly an invitation, but Kurosaki realised he was never going to get one. He crept into the apartment, shutting the door behind him gently.

He took off his shoes and stood there, not quite brave enough to cross the room and sit down beside Ryuuken. "Ishida? I really am sorry about that... whole mess."

Ryuuken could see just how fearful the other man was behaving. It was warranted, as on any occasion before he would have shot Isshin for the embarrassment he had caused. Not now. Isshin couldn't know of Ryuuken's mixed feelings, but they were chief in importance in his mind at the moment. So, instead of the typical, he simply spoke.

"I am aware."

Ryuuken took a small sip of his bourbon before setting the glass down on its matching coaster.

Ryuuken wasn't giving him much to go on. He didn't know if he should even be here! Ryuuken was giving off mixed signals --leaving a second glass for him, and yet hardly speaking to him.

Isshin stood fidgeting, looking at the second glass instead of Ryuuken. He didn't quite know what to say, aside from 'I'm sorry!' and, well, he had already said that a couple of times.

"May I sit down?" There, that seemed like a good place to start. He couldn't just apologize and run away. Something Very Serious had happened between the two men, and they needed to talk about it so that they could get past it.

Ryuuken could tell Isshin felt just as uncomfortable as he did as in typical Isshin fashion, he was fidgeting and looking away.

"I am not going to shoot you," Ryuuken said, gesturing to the cushion beside him. "Please, sit."

"Oh, good!" He said, with a big, forced smile. Isshin sat down on the sofa, his hands folded in his lap.

He couldn't think of much else to say. This wasn't a situation that he was well practiced in.

"So..." he started. "... How has work been?" It was either that or talk about the weather, and the weather was nothing exciting. It had been nearly the same since they'd arrived here.

Ryuuken lit a cigarette and took a puff, not looking at Isshin.

"Naturally, the same as ever." There was a pause as he tried to think of something to break the awkward tension building in the room and came up blank. Finally, "you?"

"Ah." That didn't help at all. If Ryuuken had had some kind of ... well, something interesting to say, they could have discussed that. And Isshin couldn't think of anything interesting to say himself!

"Oh! About the same." He looked around the apartment. "Oh. How's your cat? Is he still around?"

"Of course," Ryuuken said, as he crossed his legs, trying to make himself more comfortable. "I take good care of him." As if on cue, Mr. Nibbles walked into the room and wound himself around Isshin's legs.

Ryuuken looked over at Isshin. "I assume your dog is as well?"

Isshin looked down at the cat as it came forward, and then he leaned down to stroke it's head. "He's gotten bigger since I law saw him," he commented.

"Godzilla-chan? Yeah, she's doing well enough for a monster. She keeps trying to destroy Orpheus' stuff." He frowned. "I should probably put an ad in the paper for an obedience trainer." He chuckled, leaning back.

"But I'm kind of worried that if I did get one, they'd train her to ... to fly or something horrible like that."

"Has he? I had not noticed." Ryuuken saw the cat every day, so it seemed about the same to him. He wondered if he was overfeeding it, but twice a day was what the book had suggested--he had researched the matter before making any decisions.

"Is that what you named it? How very fitting of you." Ryuuken let out the briefest chuckle. "As long as you make sure the trainer is qualified and make your wishes known, I do not see the problem. Whoever it is will not want to scare potential customers away."

They were doing an admirable job of pretending everything was normal, but Ryuuken still felt uneasy. What had happened could never be taken back. Things would not be the same, one way or the other, no matter how long this charade continued.

"No other name seemed to fit her." He shrugged. If Ryuuken met the dog, he would understand why Godzilla-chan was so named. It wasn't that she was a bad dog, but she could be destructive. He nodded at Ryuuken's advice. He'd have to follow that, and hopefully someone would be able to teach Godzilla-chan that the entire world was not her chew toy.

But, pleasant thoughts about doggies and kitties could only distract the two of them for so long. He had come here for a reason, and it could not be avoided forever.

"... About that night." He said, looking down at the cat. "Was it... uh. Was it just the chocolate that made you... say and do things you did?"

"What an irony," Ryuuken said, as he took a sip of his bourbon. He held the drink in his mouth, savoring the taste, and was about to swallow when Isshin began to speak again.

Ryuuken almost spit up the alcohol. He covered his mouth with his hand for a moment as he set the glass down. Several deep breaths later, he had calmed down.

"Considering the fact I cannot get you off my mind, I...don't think it was." Ryuuken looked away. He couldn't stand it--the fact that all of this might not have been real, that he might be rejected. Alone, he could handle. But this was something entirely different.

Isshin reached for his drink finally, just so that his hands had something to hold onto during the conversation. He looked down into the amber liquid, nodding slowly.

Okay. So it was... real. Whatever had gone on between them had been real. At least on Ryuuken's part. But had he wanted it too? He wasn't sure.

"Ah." he said, since he couldn't think of anything else to say to that. He liked Ryuuken, but did he like him that way? He hadn't really considered it. But... He scratched at his chin. But he hadn't needed much influence from the tainted chocolate. And he'd been the one who'd really initiated things.

Did that mean that, somewhere deep down, he liked Ryuuken as more than a friend? Not that there was anything wrong with that, of course. But it really hadn't been on his mind to think of that! He'd been too worried about losing his friend to consider him as anything but a friend.

"All right, then."

The silence stretched on. Ryuuken sipped his bourbon to calm himself. Not once did he look at Isshin.

He gripped the arm of the sofa with white fingers, closing his eyes and breathing in deep.

"What is that supposed to mean?" he replied, after a pause. Even though he had said that, Ryuuken still couldn't bring himself to look at Isshin.

"I don't know." he said, calmly. He lifted up his glass as if he were going to try and drink it, then he lowered it again. Kurosaki peered over at Ishida, who was staring straight ahead. He looked back to his drink.

"I just... never really thought about that." He confessed, after another long, heavy silence had passed between the two. "It never even crossed my mind. I was more worried about losing you than whether or not ..." He didn't quite know how to finish that remark, so instead he stared down at the purring cat, watching him licking his paw and swiping it over his head.

"I like you, Ryuuken. And it'd be a shame to lose our friendship over some awful coconut chocolates. That's all I was thinking about, honestly."
