Harry had no idea what Mercy was up to and he both loved and hated a good mystery. He loved it, because learning and discovering was one of his passions. He hated it, because up until he learned what was going on, he didn't know, and that drove him crazy ( ... )

If she wasn't so damned used to werewolves, that damned big dog would give her a turn that would've frozen her to the spot. All of her coyote instincts were screaming at her to run, but she knew that dog was... different.

Then her ears pricked forward and she went tearing off after the ball when it pitched it. She overshot it - stupid because she was normally better than that - but picked it up in her mouth and ran it back to Harry.

She dropped it at his feet and then looked curiously at the dog. She took a cautious step forward, sniffing at him. Mercy sneezed but that wasn't the dog's fault. A soft questioning yip.

Harry had never seen a coyote that was willing to play fetch, but the animal reminded him a bit of Mouse, with an intelligence behind its eyes that was not normal, but certainly not in a bad way.

Mouse took a momentarily defensive stance, as if to say, "Harry is mine" before giving a pleased back and licking the side of Mercy's face. Let's be friends!

Harry picked up the ball and threw it again, this time lobbing it high into the air.

Mercy shook her head, surprised at the lick. Then she yipped and went tearing after the ball again. She liked playing as a coyote. Most believed her to be just a dog with coyote in the woodpile somewhere. She doubted that would work on Harry though.

Plus, it was cold, so the fur coat came in handy. She brought the ball back and dropped it in front of Mouse. Her tail wagged, and she yipped.

Rearing up, she tugged on the lead for the dog with her teeth. Time to get someone bigger into the game.
