January 1st, just after sirens, sector 2 lawyerific December 31 2010, 20:08:52 UTC
[Oh, this was a mistake. He hadn't meant to end up outside after sirens, especially with Maya at his side. It was dangerous - for both of them - and the thing he wanted most right now was to get back inside anywhere. He'd had his head down, concentrating on the scent that reminded him of Edgeworth and it had drawn them on toward Sector Two. It was an investigation...of sorts. But his sniffing after clues had gotten them in trouble again, there was no doubt about it.

The sound of the sirens made him fall very, very still, and he shot a glance over his shoulder toward her.]

We should get to the office, Maya. It's not safe out here.

[OOC: Ah, and posting order is Phoenix/Maya/Edgeworth. Let us know if it needs changing, bb.]

[Maya had been behind him the whole time - quiet for the most part. There were no quirky comments, no picking evidence off the ground, no bugging him to buy things for her. Instead, she'd trailed behind him like a shadow - determined to do something, anything about this situation.]

Already? Ah... Yes, let's.

[And she moved up- closer to his side.]

[The ghost knew them both intimately. Even without his power, he'd remembered all that there was to remember about the two of them. He knew, from Miles Edgeworth's memory, all of their lives. He remembered that friendship that had once baffled Miles when he'd stood across from the two of them in that courtroom, which had stood to him as a complete mystery; he remembered the moment when he had, at last, come to understand the friendship, long after they'd brought him into it with laughter and good intentions. He remembered moments of Wright's childhood, remembered the small, bright-eyed toddler in the arms of Misty Fey, those years ago when Miles' father had been summoned. He remembered the laughter they shared ( ... )

[Phoenix cast one wistful look in the direction the scent was coming from, but he knew better than to stay out after dark. There was too much going on; so much wrong in the world, and the Darkness was as dangerous as anything else. If he couldn't protect Edgeworth, then it fell to him to go back to protecting her--precisely the way she always told him not to.]

It's only two blocks, come on. I can make hot chocolate when we get there.

[I'm sorry, Edgeworth. I know I was close, but I have to think of Maya now.]

I'm not hun-

[She stopped herself, because this wasn't the time for that. She had to think of Phoenix right now. As much as she didn't want to stop investigating... What if a monster attacked them and he got hurt? She had to be the one protecting him (for once). Now, more than ever.]

T... Tomorrow morning, we'll go back out here, okay? Let's wake up really early.

[It wanted to destroy them. It wanted to tear at them, to kill them, to harm them. But Maya...A petty thief, the ghost decided, fighting against the memories of Miles Edgeworth who remembered her with such affection, who still trembled inside at that long-ago remembrance of how she'd suffered jail time just to be able to shout out the words that had prolonged his trial enough that he got free. And Wright...

The monster wanted to terribly to rend Miles' old friend. It hated Phoenix Wright for the weakness and mercy he brought about.

Aiding and abetting criminals. That was his crime. And Maya was a thief, someone who likewise had aided in injustice. The ghost decided on this, and even though it felt conflicted, it stepped forth.]

Really, really early.

[But he kept staring up the street, up into the falling Darkness, and it was in those few extra moments that he saw it. A figure emerging from it. He glanced toward Maya, then released her arm where he'd been holding onto it, stepping back the way they'd come.]

Hang on a second. If I tell you to run, run, okay?

I always wake up early, so--

[There was suddenly an uneasy feeling at the pit of her stomach. What was that up ahead? A person, at this time of night? Or...]

I'm not leaving you behind.

[The ghost's steps towards them were gaining in confidence. It kept to the shadows until it was close, and then light fell upon it; though its face was still obscured, its form, its bearing would be familiar.]

Who's there?

[Phoenix glanced toward Maya again.]

If you want to stay you can, but stay close. It could be anything...or anyone.

[But when it stepped into the light...No, it couldn't be.]

Edgeworth?

[Obediently, Maya pressed closer- right up against Phoenix's side. We'll be fine as long as we're together - That's what he had said.]

N-No way! It can't be!

[The ghost lifted its head once it is once again out of the light. It moved through the shadows swiftly, only some fifty feet from them now. When it passes once again under a light source, its face is briefly illuminated - and it's like Edgeworth's, but - corrupted. Shadowed.]

Maya, get behind me.

[He turned his shoulder into her, holding his ground, staring up at Edgeworth as he approached. Quickly--too quickly. Without a word of greeting or acknowledgement.]

Stop. Don't come any closer.

[Oh god, he wanted it to be Edgeworth. He wanted it so badly, but it wasn't. It couldn't be.]

[Again, she obeyed without a second thought. The authority in his voice was undeniable. Even if she felt like a child again- peeking her head out nervously from behind him. She stared at the approaching figure as horror slowly overtook her, and then she whispered urgently:]

N-Nick, you know what happens to people when they die here, d-don't you?

[And indeed, the creature stopped. But, nastily, coldly, it laughed, its stance shifting and leaning, eager to continue its forward motion. Some twenty feet from them, it stood, watching the two; through the darkness, the faintest outline of an eager smile twisting its lips could be seen.

But its voice is Edgeworth's.]

No "please," Wright?

[Phoenix looked toward Maya again, frowning at her. What happened to people after they died?]

What do you mean?

[He asked it over his shoulder, but his eyes were back on Edgeworth; distinctly, clearly Edgeworth, even if his smile is...terrifying. He's never looked so frightening, never laughed like that.]

Please. Is that you, Edgeworth?
