(
pretty raw with it )
It was only when he was fully facing her that he realized a few things: first, she was loaded down with a number of bags (no wonder she'd almost fallen over); second, she had a cast; third, he recognized her.
If they hadn't spoken for so long he probably wouldn't have even remembered, but the cast and that image of her in the hospital bed had made a pretty big impression on the man. Once he was sure that she definitely had her balance once more, Shizuo released the girl as carefully as he could and then looked her over once more.
"... It's you," he finally said around his cigarette, once again displaying his amazing conversation skills. It was good to see that she was out of that hospital room, but was it really soon enough for her to be wandering around on her own? Not that he hadn't done the same back when he'd been a kid and in and out of hospitals constantly, but it was different with a girl. Even if it was during the day, he found himself worried.

"It's you!" she returned, a voice a little louder and pitch a little higher than his. "...Mr. Shizuo!"
The terror on her face dissolved, became relief, and then embarrassment.
"Ah, S-Sorry! The ground was plotting against me! It waited until my guard was down, and bam! Sneak attack!"
She paused to look at him properly- she'd only seen him on her little NV screen, after all. And to confirm that it really was him - though it had to be. Geez, he was really tall, at least Godot's height, if not bigger. And still the bartender outfit and shades... Oh well, it looked pretty cool. She gave him a little awkward grin.

As she explained what had happened in her own way, he couldn't help breaking out into a smile. He figured it was more her injury and all the things she was carrying that had made her lose her footing, but it didn't matter either way.
He glanced around to double-check that she didn't have anyone with her, but it soon became clear that she was on her own. Shizuo frowned, glancing down to everything she was holding.
"Did you need some help with that?" he asked eventually. He knew he might put her in danger just by going with her, but they'd talked for a while the other day and she hadn't ever pushed him over the edge. Maybe it would be all right -- and it wasn't like he could ignore helping her now that she'd run into him. He'd been raised better than that.
He realized he'd been trying to find himself some sushi -- a small taste of home -- but that could wait until he'd made sure she was all right.

Her grin went down to a smile at the offer. He barely knew her, and he was offering to help her? "Ah, I'm just doing my Christmas shopping! You don't have to... Although, they are getting pretty heavy..."
She paused. What was he doing out here, anyway? "Are you just exploring, Mr. Shizuo? If you want you can check out the shops with me! I'm not shopping for anything girly, so don't worry."

Christmas shopping, right. He hadn't really realized that that was what all the bags were about, but... it seemed obvious that Maya had a lot of friends. He wasn't too surprised by that. Most people her age did, didn't they? And she was pretty friendly, at that.
"... You're planning to buy more?" She was definitely going to need help, then. "Ahh, I don't..." He adjusted his glasses awkwardly. "I didn't mean to intrude. I was just looking for something." But if he went with her, he could at least help her carry things. Still, shopping like that might be something personal, so he didn't want to force her to take him along. This sort of thing just got way too complicated.

Her grin became more subdued - until it was a smile. "Yep! I still have a few more people to buy for. Plus it's been a while since I got to look at stuff! Don't worry though, you don't have to come if you don't want to. But you're totally welcome. I kept passing by such cool stuff."
Not to mention the earful she'd get from... several people, for wandering on her own. If she had someone with her, they wouldn't give her such a hard time, right? ... Actually, when she thought about it, she'd probably even get lectured even worse. Oh well.
"Oh, what are you looking for? Maybe I can help!" She'd done her share of wandering around Siren's Port, of course. Plus she still wanted to be useful to him somehow, especially since he was being so nice to her.

Now it seemed they'd gotten caught into an awkward situation where neither one wanted to inconvenience the other. Shizuo held back a sigh, wondering what the best option would be. It would have been easier if she hadn't collided into him in the first place, but at the same time he was glad to have been given the chance to talk to the girl in person.
Maya was quick to try and offer help of her own, though, and Shizuo realized that there might be an easy solution to all this. "I heard there was a new sushi restaurant somewhere." Sector 6, wherever that was. "I was gonna try to find it, but maybe we can go together after you're done shopping."
That way he could help her with carrying all of her presents and she could help him find Sector 6. It seemed like the most fair option, but he didn't know if Maya had that much time to spare, and so he just quietly waited for her answer.

If possible, she perked up even more at the mention of food. He sure was endearing himself to her very quickly. "I love sushi! And I haven't been out to eat in sooo long... I'll definitely help you find it! I'm an Ace Investigator when it comes to food and restaurants, you know."
She couldn't clasp her hands together as she usually did when she was excited - but she did bow her head briefly before it bobbed back up. That was that.
"Sounds like a plan! And plus, I can get your opinion on some of the gifts."

While he wasn't certain that she'd be able to find a restaurant that was brand new, it seemed clear that she had a better idea of how the city was laid out than he did. There was no reason to doubt her, and so he nodded in agreement.
"I don't know if I'll be much help with advice, but..." He glanced down the street, doing his best to ignore the cold weather as he gestured ahead of himself. "Go ahead."
She was going to have to take the lead on this, but Shizuo didn't mind following others around. That was more or less what he did with Tom every day, since Tom was the one who kept track of who they needed to go talk to about unpaid debts. Besides, this way he could start to learn from Maya about where things were.

Sushi was exciting. "Do you know what the address is or anything like that?" It seemed like they were going to go to eat after shopping, but food was ultra-important. It would be good to know these things in advance.
"I bet you'll be lots of help!" she beamed. "I'm looking for something to help Nick look cool... And you look pretty cool, so..."
She suddenly trailed off, looking at him with a look of intent scrutiny. There was a pause, and then her face lit up again.
"Zvarri! Once again, the gift has been elegantly revealed to me! See, you're helping already."

When asked for an address his face blanked for a moment, and eventually he had to shake his head apologetically. "I only know it's in Sector 6." Which he was still clueless about. But if Maya knew, then maybe they'd have a chance of finding it.
He had no idea who Nick was either, but he did take a shining to being referred to as cool. His outfit was from his brother and the hair color had been Tom's idea; the glasses were really the only thing he could take credit for. He was about to say as much, but then--
Somehow, he was helping. He blinked at the girl from behind his glasses. "How did I help?" He must have given her an idea, but it hadn't been in an conscious way, that was for sure.

At the mention of the sector, Maya paused in consideration. She didn't seem discouraged at all, quite the opposite. "Well, I know where that is, so we'll just have to investigate the whole Sector 'till we find it!"
She tapped under her own eyes with her free hand to signify what she meant - incidentally, it was the glasses. "The glasses! I mean, Nick looks silly dorky and just about the most uncool guy ever, but I bet if he had a pair even he could look cool! Somewhat, anyway."
Having that said, she started off towards the shops.

But at least not all the people here were so bad.
He glanced over at Maya as she explained about the glasses. So that was his "coolest" trait in her opinion? He pushed them up a bit further on his face and straightened them, somewhat awkwardly.
"I guess you could try. I don't know if they'll have a pair like this around, though." Still, they could look... and the girl was already wandering off, so Shizuo had no choice but to follow, bags held in either hand.

The thoughtful look remained as she slowed to a stop all of a sudden. Possibly she'd noticed he was feeling awkward and was trying to smooth things over in her own way. Possibly she wanted to tease him. Either way, she was suddenly looking serious.
"Ah.. I almost forgot! Mr. Shizuo... If you're going to shop with me... There's something very important you have to agree to!
She gestured for him to lean a little closer, as if she was about to impart some secret knowledge.

People needed to know who he was. They needed to be able to recognize him so if they saw him walk past they would know to not say a thing unless they knew how to not piss him off.
Maya seemed to be doing pretty well herself, so far. Then again, Shizuo was fond of straight-forward people, and that she definitely was.
He almost bumped into her when she stopped so suddenly, though, and was taken aback when she sprung something new on him. He eyed her for a few seconds before shrugging and bending down slightly to lean in close as well. "Yeah?"

All her teasing was born of affection, but it was probably hard to tell considering how much she did poke fun at Phoenix.
Either way, when he leaned down, she was completely serious. And then, in a dramatic stage whisper: "This is top secret, okay?"
She held her index finger up to accentuate her point. "Who knows what an evil villain would do with my Christmas gift list? Who knows what would happen if this was leaked to the public? This is confidential!"
Her expression was so serious, it looked almost ridiculous.
"I'm entrusting you, okay? You can't let any of my secrets slip away! It's super ultra-important!"
