It was stupid to go out without having applied the putty and makeup to disguise his disfigured visage. Almost as stupid as going out after the Darkness fell, but Black Mask was used to the best business hours being after dark. Gotham's underworld thrived at night, despite having its own brand of night terrors. He refused to believe all the pimps, dealers, and thugs of this city were afraid of monsters. Scum like that either adapt to change and rise to meet the challenge, or crumble and go out of business. He wanted to know who the adapters were, and what corners they ran.

And then offer them a proposal they couldn't refuse.

So Roman Sionis walked, hands shoved into the pockets of his trench coat, comforted by the weight of deadly metal holstered around him (he'd never imagined the pros of being buried with his handguns would manifest themselves like this).

After the third empty block, Mask realized he was being followed. The scuffling behind him wasn't like any of the Darkness monsters he'd encountered thus far in his time at the Port, but there was always the chance it was something new. He ducked around a corner, pulling a gun from the holster, and then he peeped around the wall. Shuffling toward him was a scruffy old man in ragged clothing, breathing hard and clearly a homeless drunk. If there was one thing he didn't need this week, it was people following him. His irritation at being stalked by at least one faceless vigilante had amped his paranoia. And now, this goddamn lazy bastard of a society leech was tailing him.

"...gotta help me, man..." the drunk mumbled, clawing at Mask's coat.

Roman backed into the alley, drawing the drunk.

"Sure, I'll help you, brother," he sneered.

The gunshot resounded loudly in the cold air.
