It was about goddamn time. Five fucking nights that full moon had stayed in the sky, mocking Sam with its full, orange glow. He'd planned to do this days ago - weeks ago - and then out of nowhere the astrology went wonky enough to trap him as a dog night after night. More religious men than Sam would have taken it as a sign, but the shifter had some choice four-letter words tucked away for such men and such thoughts. The week of full moons had been a frustrating setback, but he wasn't about to let it throw everything to the wayside. His anger was still running too hot for that.
In the end, Sam had decided to keep with the Darkness morph he already had. The rope-faced dog was powerful, fast, and a little research had shown those disgusting tentacles on its face had a purpose; they were poisonous. A barb in the skin would turn into flesh rot. That was good enough for the shifter. That it meant he also didn't need to go running out into the Darkness to hunt down a new form was just an added bonus.
As for the rest, it fell neatly enough into place. Sam knew where the police station was, and it hadn't been difficult to find out what day Yaha would have a shift that meant leaving late at night. From there, it was only a waiting game.
The ghost-wail of the sirens called out over the island, and in the back lot of a condemned building Sam Merlotte stripped naked and changed form. The pain was the same as it had been when he shifted for Near, a strange wrongness that twisted his gut and echoed through his nerves. The pleasured release of shifting was absent; turning into a creature of the Darkness felt more to Sam like punishment.
He shifted all the same, a grizzled, wolfish mutant of muscle and monstrosity taking the place a man had once occupied. The instincts hit him all at once, just as before. Strong and insistent as ever, a thrumming mantra to rip and shred and kill and eat.
Tonight, Sam and the beast's mind were in total agreement.
Let's hunt.
