Liquid turned to study the other man in turn, his gaze determined and calm.

Even over the NV he had known that this would not be a normal battle. He hadn't expected Kadaj to look so... damaged. But of course he was. He'd lost a part of his soul. A part of his mind. Liquid knew he could never hope to understand the extent of the link between the three. To Kadaj it was easy. They were the same person. To Liquid, it was much harder to understand.

He might die here.

That was a chilling thought. The strongest thing this place had held over the outside world was the fact that he was alive here. The fact that FOXDIE hadn't killed him the way it would outside. But Liquid did not fear Death. He handled it much like any soldier. It was a part of life. Any day he might die, at the hands of anyone, whether he considered them allies or not. Kadaj might be his brother, but Liquid knew from experience - from his other half - that family ties did not prevent things like this ( ... )

"Right," he almost laughed, but there was no humour in his tone. "A good fight, just like you promised."

At one point, he had looked forward this fight, though over time the potential end result had begun to trouble him. Battle was a thrill for him, entertainment, a fun game... But not now. Under these circumstances, everything was different. He wasn't even sure what he hoped to achieve. Mother hadn't ordered this man dead. No, but Kadaj had decided to kill him anyway. Only he could choose when his brothers disappeared. Not some invisible Pull"I wanted to fight more," his voice was louder, firmer, but so taut it seemed it might snap. "I wanted to get stronger, and prove to Boss I'm not a kid, and prove to Mother I'm just as good as Sephiroth. I wanted to do a lot of things ( ... )

He shrugged his coat off, tossing it aside. It would only be a hindrance like this, and that was something he couldn't afford.

The sad part was, he could understand where Kadaj was coming from.

"That's right... it was," he mused, thoughtfully. His position shifted imperceptibly, weight shifting to his back leg. Bracing. Prepared.

Kadaj was hurting.

Even Liquid could see that. It drew an odd pain in his chest, somehow. Kadaj was his, dammit. Liquid protected his own. But he could do nothing against the Pull, and that was the most frustrating thing of all. He held his hands out, palms upwards. A submissive gesture.

"If you kill me, and I come back... I'll fight with you again," he promised. His voice rose, a challenge in his tone. If he was going to go out, he would go out fighting. "Show me your strength, Brother!"

And look. He actually called Kadaj 'brother'. A first.

Just like that, something snapped. Kadaj's smile twisted into a snarl, a kind of desperate fury burning in Mako-green eyes. His grip tightened on Souba with an audible creak of leather. He seemed to struggle, for a moment, with something internal. Some wild impulse or an explosion of anger.

"You won't come back! Even if you do you'll just disappear again."

Just like everyone else. Like Cloud, and Sephiroth. Like Aerith, whom he'd once called "Mother". Like Big Boss. And now like Loz.

"I've had enough."

He charged. His swings were brutally strong but wild and careless. Far too unbalanced to fight at his best. Far too emotional, and it showed in every movement. But there was also a savage determination in him and his attacks. No holding back this time; he was fighting to kill.

Liquid swung his arm up to block the sword swing, slamming it into the blunt side and using the momentum to slide the blade to the side before it could strike him.

"Don't be ridiculous!" he chided, kicking out sharply towards Kadaj's stomach. "If I disappear, it's the end, and I refuse to allow that to happen!"

To disappear... to fade into nothingness and return to that world. That was unacceptable. This was going to be a dangerous battle. Kadaj was a strong opponent at the best of times. A memory came back to him, strong and sturdy. His voice - but not.

'Listen. There's not a soldier alive that doesn't question himself. And if there is one, he's nothing more than a murderer.'He'd told that to Snake once before, immersed in a game of lies and deceit, under the guise of a man who lay lifeless in the room where Liquid had left him. It was true. Even Liquid questioned himself. Even Snake did. Kadaj surely did too. The boy had an attitude like a child who'd been told that his toys would be taken away if he didn't share them. An 'if I ( ... )
