There was a very odd moment of dissonance when he saw Lily barrelling toward the elevator. All conscious thought stopped, all reason abandoned him, replaced with the prey's instinctive fear of the predator and the chilling certainty that he was going to die. Liam was frozen stiff.

Unfortunately this allowed Mr. Lunettes, the well-trained Pandora agent and ever-polite servant, to overwhelm the body of poor terrified Liam. And he knew exactly what to do in this situation.

"Of course, Maam," he said, flashing her a smile as he punched the button for floor nine. Then he stepped back and watched the doors close.

At this point the more sensible Liam caught up with the automaton Mr. Lunettes, reminded him of the present and pressing danger, and the united front of Liam Lunettes came to the conclusion that this was Bad. It was Bad in every way imaginable, and probably several ways that he didn't have the creativity for. He stumbled backwards and flattened himself against the opposite wall of the elevator, staring at her in unabashed horror. What could he do? He had pressed the buttons! The elevator was moving! He was trapped! And he had pressed ten, so now she knew-- no no, he could fix this. He took an awkward step forward and punched floor three before retreating back to the corner. He could step off there. She would never know. He could just take the stairs up to floor ten and move out as soon as possible.

And who knew? Maybe she didn't even recognize him. He was very good at being invisible. People forgot him all the time. Perhaps less so when he was smashed against the wall so hard that he might meld into it, and never mind the hyperventilating, but the girl seemed awfully stupid. Maybe if he just held his breath and didn't move.
