Apartment hunting, they called it. Those buildings were quite different from the igloos she was used to back home, or the caves, or the small houses provided them in the Earth Kingdom and Fire Nation (the latter while they were on the run of course). On her way back to the Starter apartments, she stopped short at the sound of a squeal of fright, and then the aggressive growl of a monster.
"Oh... Spirits!" Katara sucked in a breath and sprinted down the street herself, heading towards the sound. The canteen at her side was uncapped with a flick of her thumb, her eyes scanning her surroundings. "Is anyone there?" She called out loud. "I'm coming to help ( ... )

Was that a voice?
"I don't know where I am!" Vanille shouted in a rather panicked way, running along as fast as she could and hoping she was heading towards help, because she was beginning to feel out-of-breath. "Um, there's buildings--and some lovely curbs and things, and--ack! Get away, you ugly thing!"
This at the monster, which had caught up close enough to grab at her skirt.

Buildings? Lovely curbs? If the situation wasn't so serious Katara would probably laugh. More importantly, just as she's passing an alley she catches sight of a girl dashing by, with a monster hot on her heels. There! That had to be them. Katara skidded and darted after them, bursting out the other end of the alley. Oh man was that creature ugly.
"HEY!" Katara shouted to get the beast's attention, whipping an arm out and sending a whip of water out to snap at the creatures' back. Pay attention to meeeeeeeeeeeeee. "Leave her alone, ugly!"

"Yay!" Vanille cheered, pumping a fist in the air. "Get it!" The dark-haired girl looked pretty young, but then, Vanille had been fighting for her life on the plains of Gran Pulse at that age, so she knew age was no hinderance. And without a weapon of her own, she would take rescue in whatever form it came.

Howevah! Now was certainly not the time to complain about its looks. She'd heard about these things but never encountered one until now, so as the water retracted, Katara shifted into a defensive stance. It attacked, and Katara's arms moved again in a flowing pattern, coming in front of her as the water responded by swirling out of whip form and into the form of a shield, freezing into ice.
The creature's attack connected with the shield, pushing Katara back slightly - she used the momentum to break the shield down into water again, letting it twirl around her and then sent forward like a lance, cannoning straight into - and through - the beasts chest. Ew. Mind you don't stand too close Vanille, you might get a little wet!

"Eek!" She cringed as the watery lance impaled the monster in the chest, splattering slime and dark blood as it collapsed to the ground, and wiped at some of the slime that had gotten onto her skirt with a grimace. "Well that wasn't very pretty. Not that I don't appreciate the rescue, of course!"

Another quick glance around followed, the water snaking around her and re-sleeving her arms in water in case another beast chose to raise its head before they were able to get to safety.

Her newfound friend certainly had some interesting spells, Vanille observed, watching the way she encased her arms in water again. "I feel great, actually, not having been eaten, but maybe we should get inside somewhere." She sighed. "Sazh warned me about getting caught out at night unprotected. I didn't mean to, though!"

She shuddered slightly. She knew they were lucky that time- the next time a monster showed up they would probably in serious trouble. "I'm glad I got you in time though. Who's Sazh?"

Either way, though, they definitely couldn't stay standing here. Vanille grasped her rescuer's hand--the water was cool and felt pleasant on her skin--and pulled her off in the right direction. "Sazh is a friend of mine. We were together with some other nice people before I came here. I'm Vanille, by the way. What's your name?"
Reply
"I traveled with friends before I came here too - they're not here though." She grimaced a little at the reminder of who was there. "It's good you have a friend with you here though. Oh! I'm Katara. It's nice to meet you, Vanille - sorry it was under rather...stressful circumstances." She added with a chuckle.

She nodded in sympathy as Katara mentioned her own friends. Her hand still gripped the younger girl's, feeling no need to let go. "Most of my friends aren't here, either--I looked for them, when I first came. But I'm so lucky to have Sazh." She sighed and swung their hands, looking up at the sky. "But! When you don't have your old friends about, you can still make new friends!"

Of course she didn't mind if Vanille wanted to hold onto her hand or even swing it. It was admittedly amusing. The gesture brought more of a grin to her face as she listened to the upbeat girl's words. "You are lucky. You could be stuck here with people from your world who are your enemies." She frowned a bit at the thought.
"Do you think maybe your friends will get pulled here too?" And by that same thought... maybe Katara's too.

She nodded with sudden seriousness; she knew how lucky she was, and she wouldn't want any of her enemies to be here. Not that she had any enemies, unless of course you counted the entirety of Cocoon.
"Is that what happened to you?" she asked worriedly. "Cause if anyone's trying to bother you, I could help you out. I'm pretty handy in a fight! I mean, when I have my binding rod," she added sheepishly.
"I don't know." She frowned. "I don't know if I should even hope they're pulled here."
Reply
"WHat? Oh -nono, you don't have to do that. I can handle them in a fight," unless they tried ganging up on her that is, and she didn't think that was very likely. "I wouldn't want to pull you into my problems."
Another pause, as she considered the latter, nodding slowly. "I know I shouldn't wish for them to be here, especially given that we were in the middle of fighting a war back home... but I can't help but miss them."

She could definitely understand Katara's feelings regarding her friends. All of her emotions were conflicting--wanting them to be here, not wanting them here, thinking it would be better here and not thinking it. All she knew was that she missed them desperately.
"They're in a war too?" she asked, startled, and then winced at her slip. "I mean...mine aren't...it's not really a war, though there's been lots of fighting."
