[A walk normally would settle Byakuya's mind, but all he could hear was the impulsive and inane babble of Senbonzakura rattling through his mind. It was rather disturbing to hear himself babbling to himself.

He wondered why his grandfather had put up with him.

Feeling the power, Byakuya couldn't help but put a hand on the hilt of Senbonzakura. He's been showering sakura blossoms wherever he walks since this morning. Now wasn't any different. In fact, he put a hand on the hilt and the blossoms increased.

Very carefully, he approached the building, keeping an eye open for the Espada he could feel near by.]

[Nelliel sensed the shinigami's approach from some distance away. Hard not to sense power like that. Still, she made no move to attack. She kept her lance at the ready and stood her ground. There was no need to start a fight without knowing what it was that he wanted. Perhaps he was only investigating to make certain her surge in reiatsu wasn't due to her attacking anyone in Siren's Port and would move on. It was equally possible that he was here for a fight, though, so she remained watchful and alert.]

[He recognized the signature. He had felt the Espada around the city at various times. It was only the laws of the land that kept him from attacking. However, with the sakura blossoms swirling around him - Senbonzakura was quite annoying - he didn't dare let it pass, laws or not.

Especially since he knew how powerful the reiatsu was. He was concerned, not because the Espada appeared to be in battle, but because normal humans would not be able to withstand it. It was why he'd chosen to go out at night. Then, the walls would protect them from the power he could not currently contain.

He saw the lance and Senbonzakura was ticked loose in the sheath. He saw the woman and ticked up an eyebrow, waiting for her to speak.]

[Nelliel's posture relaxed only slightly when the shinigami captain made himself known and didn't outright attack. With precious few notable exceptions, shinigami were enemies. It would be foolish to let her guard down entirely, but if he was willing to show very basic civility and restraint, he would be shown the same courtesy.

Still, Nelliel was not in a good mood. Willing as she might be to share this somewhat isolated area with someone who could withstand her power and who needed to get away from others, a shinigami wasn't welcome. The only shinigami who would have been welcome to join her were no longer here. Her tone was calm and even when she spoke, but devoid of warmth.]

Was there something you wanted?

[He didn't relax at all, his hand blatantly on the hilt of his sword. The sakura blossoms swirled around him, refusing to settle. His voice was even and calm. He hadn't yelled in a century or more.]

It is my duty to protect human souls.

Then you are wasting your time here, shinigami. I came here to get away from humans so I could avoid hurting them.

[It was the truth, and there was no sign of dishonesty in her voice. Whether the shinigami captain believed her or not was another matter entirely.]

[He didn't believe it. She was still an Arrancar.]

You do not have protections built into your home?

They were not designed to withstand an Espada's release form for upwards of twelve hours. Much less Espada ranked 4 and up.

[Plus there was the fact that her reiatsu wasn't the only arrancar's rising. She motioned to the yellow caution tape surrounding the condemned building.]

This place has already been labelled unsafe for humans.

[He ticked up an eyebrow, watching her. That wasn't something that he wanted to hear. The Espada outnumbered them and he worried that the mortal authorities would not be enough. He had hoped that if the effects were random then it would not effect all the Espada the same.]

That does not stop them. Most have little regard for the law.

If a building labelled unsafe, someone who is obviously not human standing outside with a large weapon in hand, and the spiritual pressure making it uncomfortable to get near does not deter them, I have no idea what will.

[Byakuya couldn't help the amused tick of the eyebrow. She had a point.]

You are Espada. You do not care for human souls.

You are half right. I am an Espada, but there are humans I care about.

[There's a brief pause before she adds]

And a pony.

[His eyebrow ticks up just a bit higher, not quite believing it. But he doesn't say anything. Most especially not about ponies. Because that would be undignified. And the flower petals currently falling out of his sleeves were undignified enough for five people.]

[Nelliel is only slightly amused by the flower petals. Ichigo once explained a few details about the shinigami captains' abilities. Those are no ordinary flower petals and she knows it. Had the man been afflicted with the same ability Ishida was stuck with, she might have laughed.

Instead, she goes on to list individuals she's grown fond of.]

Raven. Ishida. Sasuke. Keigo. Franziska. Poison Ivy. Jiraiya. And Rainbow Dash.

I would help any of them if they asked me to.

[The Quincy, his annoying room mate, and Rainbow. The first two he expected to know the risks. Rainbow... perhaps he should speak to her. Or at least keep a closer eye on her.]

[Nelliel considers what she had heard of shinigami vs. her actual experiences for a moment.]

I realize it probably goes against what you learned about the Espada, but some of us are capable of caring about others.

[Her voice is quieter, more reflective, when she speaks next.]
