049. Audio -> Video

[Light's power is reversed as of the beginning of this event, though he isn't aware of this. This means that he'll have to obey orders that he's given by anyone over audio or video. Orders that Light doesn't want to obey won't work, so although he's being wordy orders to shut up, for instance, won't work so well. He likes talking, okay? If you want ( Read more... )

[She has since received the rest of the clips from Black Mask but she's in no mood to go around accusing anyone, least of all Light. She's sitting up in bed and she listens to his broadcast a few times before responding.]

Was it ever a game in the first place or is that just an expression?

That's a very interesting question, but you'd have to know a little more about my past to understand. I suppose you have all the time in the world right now?

Yes, I'm willing to listen. We can private this conversation as well, if you'd like.

Only because it concerns someone else whose affairs I'd rather stay private.

[Private.]

Have you heard about the Death Note? I think Black Mask mentioned it last night, but it's possible you'd heard about it before then.

I've heard bits and pieces of rumors about it. If you could explain it better to me, I'd appreciate it.

Alright. Then I'll start at the beginning. I came across it one day, on my way home from school, a blank black notebook with rules handwritten inside. It was a Shinigami's notebook, used for killing humans. At first I didn't believe it, so on a whim I tried. I wrote a name into the notebook, and a man died. At first it made me sick, and I considered throwing it away, but then who else would pick it up? Nobody could be trusted, and I...I had the opportunity to do what so many could only dream of. I could purge the rotting world I saw around me of the injustice that choked the life out of it.

You see, my world is a lot like this one. People escape conviction through slip ups in the law, they escape jail, they indict others, they pay bribes. I killed them. With my notebook I killed criminals across the world. It wasn't a game then, I was cleansing the world of evil, and people listened.

People like L.

[The story sounds a lot like a fairy tale. Find a book, kill people with it. If she didn't know the Shinigami and the Espada, she would think he was lying. She knows he's not. Light has always spoken fondly of justice but now... Now she knows how far he's willing to go to bring it to the world.]

Cleansing the world, one person at a time.

[She pauses.]

Who is L?

L was hired by Interpol to find the murderer that the world had begun to call Kira. He was the World's Greatest Detective, and his first move was to put a criminal on air masquerading as him.

I had already decided that I would do anything, kill anyone, in order to keep my secret, even my family, should it become necessary. I killed Lind L. Taylor, and everyone watched Kira's power as it was demonstrated live on television.

It became a game then. Like chess. I moved. He moved. Our identities were both secret, and the one that was revealed first would lose.

[Her body may be tired, but her mind is wide awake enough to keep up with all of these details. She's recording all of this for herself, heavily encrypted in her NV to ensure that no one else hears these unless she wills it. Light is confessing his crimes.]

How long did this "game" go on?

More than a year. I killed almost ten thousand criminals, and a dozen of my pursuers in that time. He closed the net on me, and I turned myself in...that was when I lost my memories. Intentionally. The Death Note was passed along to another killer, and L and I pursued him together.

I was desperate to redeem myself, to prove that I couldn't be Kira--that is the Light that came here, the Light that Edgeworth killed, an innocent and desperate young man who didn't recall his crimes.

I went home, and I killed L. Ten days after his death I came back here.

[She's silent for several moments, letting that sink in. She actually shifts herself to lean forward, resting her chin on her knuckles. Ten thousand.

You went home after all of that? Everyone thought you had simply-

[Foolish. She sighs.]

You killed L and then what? Did you continue what you started?

I took over for him. He had no identity, so I assumed it. Ten days -- but I already know my future. As L and Kira I kill another ninety thousand. With that freedom, without L, I bring war to an end, decrease the crime level by 70% worldwide, and improve the lives of billions of people.

And then there's a new game. Near and Mello, both of whom are here in the Port. L's successors.

And what will they do now? What have they been doing?

Not much, not really. It's not much of a game, which is why I've been concentrating on living.

When did you direct your attentions to Yaha?

Last year, and with honest intentions. He was dangerous, and I thought I could control him.
