Yevon was Spira's main religion. Among other things, it forbade the use of any advanced technology, and taught its followers to embrace death.

The Al Bhed, needless to say, did not think much of that.

A thousand years before my time, machina were commonplace. However, due to a rather unfortunate series of circumstances, they came to be regarded as a symbol of arrogance and reliance on the material world.

Well, or so the official version of the story goes. In reality, they wished to keep a fearful and compliant population under their control.
