[Some people may take the appearance of a strange green thing floating aimlessly into their path as a threat. Especially when it happens in their own home. Snake is one of them ( Read more... )

It's a black thing with a green coat and silly hat? Which makes me think magic of some sort.

[Flatly.] Magic.

[He's heard that before. Despite having had a demonstration or two by now, it's still a little hard to swallow.]

Yes, if something unusual has a silly hat and coat, magic is usually behind it.

...

[It says a lot about the current state of Snake's life that he can't quite decide whether he's supposed to take that seriously or not.]

You know from experience, huh?

I do.

Besides, scientists are all about form and function. Silly hats and coats rarely serve a function.

[Neither does programming a giant robot to roar like a dinosaur, but there you are. Obviously you're not speaking to the right scientists.]

I'll have to take your word for it.

[Not exactly his area of expertise.]

That's a pretty risky thing.

Might be a bit. But that depends on you.

[He's not really worried. Snake's made a lifestyle out of high-risk missions. A big part of that comes down to trusting his gut. Doesn't mean he won't take unconfirmed intel with a grain of salt, but he wouldn't have asked a bunch of strangers for information in the first place if he wasn't willing to have a little faith.]

[Since Harry's word at this point pretty much amounts to "yep, it's totally magic" it's sort of a moot point.]

What do you mean by "magic?"

Manipulation of various energies without the use of technology.

Right.

[Which tells him pretty much nothing. He's more of a practical person than a technical one.]

Don't suppose you know anything useful?

Don't suppose you know the right questions to ask?

Not really. Last I checked there was no such thing as magic.

I don't even know what to say to ignorance of those levels.

Wait, yes I do. Have you checked since you arrived here?

[In his defense, where he comes from, technology does a lot of stuff that could be attributed to "magic." He's stubborn like that.]

Haven't had much of a reason until now.

Magic is mentioned like twice a day. Half the people here can do magic. When you arrived, you got some sort of special ability, and you haven't had much of a reason until now?

It's a wonder you're not dead or eaten yet. Unless you are dead or eaten, then my condolences.

You're making a lot of assumptions.

[Snake...isn't very social. And a late-bloomer as far as dormant abilities go. Most of what he's seen here hasn't fazed him too much. He's used to dealing with weird shit on a pretty regular basis. He wouldn't call any of it magic. Though the fireball-slinging psychic and the immortal wannabe vampire probably come close.]

I make a habit of being hard to kill.

[Your concern is touching, though. :|]
