[The feed opens with Merlin staring down skeptically at the book in his hands. There’s a moment’s pause, and then he glances back at the baseball diamond before turning back to the book.]

Er-- [He taps it once, making the screen shake, and then leans in a bit too closely, speaking as softly as he can.]

Hello? The man over there said I could talk to ( Read more... )

[Have someone a little less starstruck. Yeah, Merlin's legend might be world famous, but Hitsugaya is only mildly aware of it. Not that he'd care anyway.]

The descriptions and the name are unfamiliar to me, though if any of them are here, I'd assume they're likely to answer you.

[He nods.]

We don't have this sort of-- [A moment's hesitation.] --science from where-- when-- I'm from, so they might not have seen this. Thank you, though.

Everyone who arrives here recieves a device that connects to this network.

[He catches on to that hesitation, though, and figures he knows what Merlin wanted to say in place of "science."] I don't know about at your home, but here, no one would be all that surprised to hear you say "magic."

[He stares in shock at him-- and then, slowly:]

Magic-- magic isn't illegal, then?

No. It isn't. A lot of people here can use some form of it. [Including himself, but he doesn't bother mentioning that for the moment.]

Who rules here?

The first thing you'll need to understand about the government here is that it isn't a monarchy. Its officials are elected.

The second thing you'll need to understand is that most of the true power lies with two opposing corprations: SERO and AGI. I'd advise you to avoid any association with them, however.

Why?

They deal in some reprehensible practices that are surprisingly legal here. SERO in human experimentation. AGI in slavery.

What do you mean by human experimentation?

[Yeah, he'd kind of thought that much would be self-explanatory. What's not to understand?] They . . . conduct scientific research on people. Likely involving drugs, dissection . . . I'm no scientist, so I can only speak in generalities.

And people allow it to happen?

Few people are pleased with it. But being one of the financial powers in the city helps them get away with a lot of things.

But I mean-- whoever is king-- or, well, not king, but the elected official-- surely he has some say in how things are run?

I'm sure he does, but these corporations hold a great deal of influence, and I find it unlikely that he's exempt from it.

[A nod-- and then he blinks.]

Is it safe for you to be telling me these things?
