Pretty much! My guardian was trying to convert base metals into gold. Or find the elixir of life. I learned a lot of things about science and chemistry, but also some of the more... not science-y things.

It's also called the grand panacea. It's supposed to heal all illnesses and grant eternal life.

You've heard about it? I didn't think there were really alchemists still around...

Well, alchemists really did have a firm existence... not in the 20th century so much, but in the past. There are lots of great alchemical works and alchemy also had a great deal of influence on early chemistry and philosophy.

But people don't really believe in alchemy as a real pursuit anymore. It's occult, weird, or worse. But the traditions still go on here and there.

That's better, really, because if the great world powers got a hold of some of the knowledge alchemists hold, well. A little love potion would hardly be the biggest trouble.
