It would be interesting to look through the records of this city and determine a real proportional relationship between the crime rate and the amount of newcomers in the city. I am sure that, were such a study to be conducted, we would find that murder in the City preexists the presence of newcomers. Murder is prevalent where ever there are large ( Read more... )

[First it's quiet, and then there's a deep breath before Yoite speaks.]

[likewise, takes a pause before replying:]

The people. You refer to the newcomers--us? Or the original residents. Or to both as a whole.

Original residents. What I mean to say is that our presence doesn't compromise their innocence. It's clear that they've always been that way.

Yes. I would agree to that. The level of corruption in this city was serious long before our presence here. In this case, then, they are merely seeking scapegoats--someone to blame.

So you have recovered.

That's normal.

I don't know.

The normalcy of it does not make it any less dangerous a situation. It would take one very small spark to ignite this issue.

I see. You are, I note, conscious. That is a significant improvement in your condition.

No. But if people are used to the idea - if we are, I mean - it might be easier to handle.

If we were prepared for that eventuality, you mean? Mentally, or physically?

Maybe both. Mostly mentally.

More or less.

That would be ideal. But I think that the other newcomers are more likely to overexcite themselves with worry, rather than think competently about the issue.

Did you sustain lasting injury?

Then I can only prepare myself and Miharu, in the meantime.

Not externally.

Would you remain independent of more organized efforts of preparation, should it come to that?

Then internally. Were you knocked unconscious by another person? Or by something else?

I don't know. I don't usually like that sort of thing.

Not by anyone.

Potentially, it would have a great benefit to you. Others may be able to provide assistance to you and Miharu that you could not supply yourself.

Then by what?

I could- I can provide for him. [He feels stupid saying it, but he's offended.]

I wasn't feeling well.

Perhaps. But there are a great deal of variables. Would reliance upon the combined strength of a group not provide more comfort?

You were ill?
