It's technology, we know that much. Some believe it to be sentient, others that it's under the control of someone. No one really knows anything else about it. No one can get near enough to it to find out.

More than that - there are people guarding it.

It's the source of the Pull - the force keeping us all here. It's what brought us to the Port to begin with. And on occasion it will replace us if we die.

There's two alternating theories that lead to the same proven result. On occasion, a person who has died here will return to life. The theories are that either they're brought back - or the Core brings them from a different point and swaps their memories with the dead ones.
