It's truly amazing how you can stop feeling so stressed out if you just turn your NV off for the night. [She means Sunday night when she went to the ryokan with Gin.] Of course, when you need to go to work and you have to turn it on twelve hours later, you certainly feel like you've missed a bit. It was nice while it lasted, though.
I do wonder, sometimes, about whether anything we do can actually seem like an accomplishment in this city. There's so many stipulations and nothing ever seems to be clear-cut any longer. You lock one criminal away and he ends up being bought out by a company and put back on the streets. You help someone find a business and some loans only to have some of the locals trash the business and steal their money a few days later. Is that something to be proud of? I spoke with people in the police force about much the same and all they said was to stop expecting so much; "You're hoping for things that won't happen" and "It's part of the job."
Back home, you were severely punished if you weren't filling up to quota. Perfection was the key. Of course, like in any city, those at the top could be afforded a little leeway with their mistakes. My own superior, for instance, was fine with sitting behind his desk and being lazy, not even thinking for himself, while the rest of his employees did the field work. Even if he paid the final price for relying too much on his Entourage.

All that's left is his cottage, his things, and a missing person's report that will never be solved unless he comes back.]
