[Amongst all of the somber voices on the network today, Sarina is a bit of a contrast, as her usual confused expression flashes on the video feed. Oh, she was most definitely going to be having some WORDS with Mr. Hypocrite if he came back, but by now she was almost used to people disappearing that she spoke with to be too terribly bothered by the

Moderation is the key! And anyway, that's only one day out of the year that you weren't feeling well. Wishing someone a 'Happy New Year' is wishing all three hundred and someodd days of the year to be happy.
[ And a bemused grin. Combatant Kitten. ] Unfortunately I never had a pet fish, so I can't help you there. Why not look around in the pet shop?
And Happy New Year to you too, Sarina.

That's the thing! Why would you want to spend the first day of the year sick?! It seems like a dumb way to start out a supposedly happy year, if you ask me!
Yeah, I guess I'll do that.
But uh I guess I hope you do okay with that moderate drinking thing?
Reply
Mm, well, some people take the 'celebrating' part a little too much to heart. They'll risk the hangover, the vomiting, the little pink ogres dancing in dresses afterwards. Maybe they're trying to drown last year out with more alcohol than they can tolerate. It's hard to say why some people will drink that much.
Uh -- oh I... I probably won't be drinking. I have to work... and I want to check some books out of the library.

Pink ogres? Eehee?
I don't get it! I've heard from some people that it helps them "forget" their problems...but if it makes them feel like shit and gives them more problems, why would they bother?
[She sighs, frowning.] Besides, if your problems are that bad, you're not going to be forgetting them anytime too soon.
[Oh right. Work. Like she had to do as well, in a few hours.]
You too, huh? Heehee -- which books are you getting?

It made for interesting conversations, let me tell you.
No, .. no you're not. But some people, if they don't have a support system, they can't handle the problems life throws at them, so they drink. And then they remember, and then they drink, and then they remember -- and they become drunkards.
[ She's silent a moment. ] Huh? Oh - um. Books on magic, mainly. Witchcraft and Wizardry is intriguing.
Reply
[Cue the forced smiiiiiile.] Oh, I'd know nothing about that, eheheh...
[She then snorts.] So that's how people deal with problems here?
[First grimacing at the sheer stupidity of the idea, she soon came to the conclusion that those people were still better than her...probably. Fading into a subtle frown, she continued.]
I guess there's worse ways to deal with problems, huh? Heehee?
Oh? Did you find anyone to talk about magic with yet?
Reply
That's probably a good thing. [ A pause. ] I don't know if that's the only reason people deal with problems here. It can't be, or we'd be tripping over drunken bums every time we turned around.
There probably are a lot of ... unhealthy, self destructive ways to deal with their problems, that would make drinking look tame. I do wonder though, about that. What people do when they're upset. What about you, Sarina?
[ And brightly. ] Yeah, I did. A newcomer, Harry Dresden - he showed up just a few days ago, but he seemed pretty willing to talk with me about magic. [ Not that she was going to stop there, because what little she spoke to him about indicated he didn't know fairy 'gifts' or curses. ]
Reply
Yeah probably, eehee.
[She glanced at the screen cautiously.] You mean what do I do when I'm upset?
[You probably wouldn't want to know, Ella.]
That's good, I guess! Sorry I'm not much help, on the subject.
Reply
[ Ella will even volunteer information. ] I used to play the mandolin -- but I don't have it anymore. Not here anyway.. and I don't know if the stores even carry them. I certainly haven't found one yet. [ Though she saw similar instruments. ]
Oh, don't worry about it. I think a lot of people don't really know about magic.

You should try Brooke's store! Eheh...even though he disappeared a long time ago and I think they turned his place into a restaurant now.
But I'm sure it must be nice to talk about something like that, with someone that has a better understanding of it, huh?
Reply
Ah, I thought about it but yeah, they turned the place into a restaurant. Just my luck huh? But I have enough money saved up - I'm going to pick something up at the music store tomorrow.
Actually it is. I mean, there are still differences between his magic and the way magic works on my world, but I won't know for sure until I speak with him again. He promised to give me a demonstration sometime.

It's too bad. Brooke was a really good guy. Heehee...he was the first person I talked to, in the city. It's too bad you didn't get to meet him. Good luck finding it, either way.
There's all sorts of magic here, isn't there? It's kind of cool but I hope no one takes advantage of those people.

What happened to him? Did he... was he killed? [ She almost doesn't want to ask that - it's a sensitive topic, especially now. ] Thanks - I'm sure I'll be able to find something.
Surprisingly there is. I'm used to there being just one type of magic being more general, but here - there's so many books, and schools of magic, I'm - it's going to take a while to look through it all.

He...disappeared. I don't know what happened, for certain.
So are you going to try to learn all of these types of magic for yourself?
Reply
Disappeared... [ Like what happened with Sarina's friend, hopefully. But she's going to jump away from that topic like a cat off a hot griddle. ]
Am I ... what, for me? What - what do you mean by that? [ Because she has absolutely no reason to test magic out on herself. Honest. ]
