The priorities of this city astound me, sometimes.
[Re-l's voice is rigid and unemotional, surprisingly, kept in check with every ounce of control that she has.]
There's a killer on the loose and instead of putting their best people on the case, they're taking any volunteers. No one wants to get their hands dirty and no one wants to go against someone who might actually be doing good in the city by wiping newcomers off the map. Even better, they take a newcomer off of the case, and for what-
[She breaks off to give herself a moment.]
Because the city doesn't want to pay for overtime, and since I've clocked in too many hours for the past two pay periods, I can't work for at least a week. [She's not looking for a reward or money, she just wants to find the answers and stop this killer.] Now, of all times, even though I'm assigned to a high priority case.
[Her control cracks a little, and she sighs. Her voice is tinged with regret and anger, finally, as she quietly continues.]
Too emotional. My partner is dead and they sent me home for being too emotionally involved. "Go home, you've worked too much and we won't pay you. Go home, you're too emotional for this."
[A long pause enters in, and there's a faint sound of a glass hitting the table as she sets it down.]
What a way to celebrate six months in this damn city.
