You could try some armour? Coat's can be ripped in pieces. Armour is much more durable.

Maybe, if I was sure that Oro wouldn't try and using it as a chew toy when we finally find somewhere that's wolf-friendly to live in.

Livelier doesn't always mean emotions. Just look at Terra. Full of emotion and he still linefaces a lot.
