[The little girl on the NV looks a little puzzled tonight as she stares into the camera. She's lying on the ground on her stomach, her head propped up with both of her hands, head tilted to the side slightly. She hums a little under her breath before finally speaking.]Everyone is supposed to be able to see this, right? I need a lot of people to see ( Read more... )

[Alice smiles kindly.]

I had to learn how to be a sister, too, back home. And yeah, that's how it's supposed to be. Big sisters always set a good example for their little sisters.

[The smile turns a little proud.]

[She's still on the floor, the ground surrounding her covered in crayons and construction paper.]

You did? How did you learn? Did someone teach you?

I guess I can say I was taught, but I think... it was more like following my gut instinct.

[A glance at the camera.]

A gut instinct? What's that?

A gut instinct... is something that you just believe is natural, I guess. That's the best way I can explain it. [She smiles and shrugs a little.]

Did you need to be a big sister to anyone here?

Something natural...hmmm.

I'm not sure which one of us would be older and which would be younger yet. That's why I need to know both just in case.

It's kind of hard to explain why it feels natural. But then again-- I like taking care of people. [She smiles]

Hm? Why can't you tell who'll be older and who'll be younger? [She's curious, wanting to know more]

[She giggles.] I know someone that really likes taking care of people too. Well, sort of.

Oh...because in the storybooks, whoever is born first is the oldest. But neither of us was born, so I'm not sure which one would be the younger sister or the older sister. I think she's taller, so maybe that would make her older.

Really? Is he here on the island? [She brightens up considerably.]

That's interesting. Well-- whatever role you two play, you two could still be sisters. Both younger and older sisters look out for each other.

Mmhmm! [But that's all she's saying about that aspect of her shy friend.]

Yeah...it sounds like no two families really work the same way. That makes it harder to figure out if you've never had to be in one before.

You've never been in a family before? [Her tone turns tender]

I was for a little bit, but not long enough to learn about it.

Family worked different there, though. Here, it's a lot more complicated. So...that's why I have to learn all about it.

Really? How did a family work in your world? How is it different from how it is here?

Someone told me that here babies are born normally, like they used to be a long time ago. It doesn't work like that in the dome...
