It'd be rather nice if we knew that. The core, IF it has a will of it's own, hasn't been forthright in letting us know why it brings people here from all across time and space.

People here can apparently come from the same world, at different time periods. People can even arrive after their own demise. Though I highly doubt you can call this an afterlife, with so many of us still alive.
