[A few beats of near silence--muffled traffic noises, mostly. It might seem like this was an accidental recording, that the NV just turned on in a pocket--but eventually, after some deliberation as to whether or not this is even worth asking--]They haul people off all the time. I know that--that's not what I'm interested in. What I'm interested in ( Read more... )

What do you mean 'they haul people off all the time'? You mean they kidnap people? Who?

Of course, yeah; hasn't anyone told you, it's practically a given around here. And it's those corporations--AGI, SERO--all those bastards.

A couple of people mentioned the companies, but I just thought they had political clout, not that they went round kidnapping people. Isn't it against the law?

If they have political clout, then they mostly are the law, aren't they. And they make excuses for it, so it seems as if it's all right and proper and lawful--make accusations or something; I don't know. But they do it.

Having power or position doesn't put you above the law. If it's unlawful, then it can be stopped.

[Is this what Edgeworth meant by asking him if he wanted to step up to the bar? These companies...could make his job very difficult. Not that it's stopped him in the past.]

But why...? Why would they kidnap anyone?

It isn't, as I said. They make excuses for it, or else do it in secret. They say someone's done something, so that gives them the right to haul them off and have done with them.

And I s'ppose it's because of what their corporations do. Or hasn't anyone told you about that, either.

...

I've seen their names on everything around here: hospitals, public buildings, even magazines, but all I know is their practices aren't entirely ethical. Nobody really had time to tell me what exactly those activities were.

I'm sorry, this probably isn't a great time for you to have to spoonfeed me the basics. [It's difficult to make sense of without the facts, but let's put it together: kidnapped people, obvious agitation, trying to find out where those people are kept--] Did they take someone you know?

They kidnap people, and either they sell 'em off into slavery, to be used for one thing or another, or else they conduct some experiments on 'em. It's one or the other, depending on which one decides they like the look of you. And if no one who spoke to you had the time to tell you that--well, I wouldn't speak with them again in a hurry, they might be out to get you. Anyone decent would've warned you straight off.

[a short, humorless laugh.] I don't know, mate, you tell me. Did they?

[How can this be legal? Slavery? Experimentation? It makes him feel sort of sick.]

Well I think they had other things on their mind, really, so it's hardly their fault.

So what are you going to do? [Why do I feel like it's probably something stupid?]

I'll do anything.

See, that doesn't sound very healthy to me.

Not precisely my concern right now, not when there's something to be done.

But what kind of something? Getting yourself kidnapped too?

I'll do whatever finds him fastest--whatever gets the most information. Kidnapping seems rather contrary to that, at this point, so, no, likely not.

Right... Well if you need any help, this does seem like the best place to look for it. Is there anything I can do? I know I only just got here, but investigation is my strong suit.

What, so it's another one for the police, is it? Investigations are slow.
