So the only things I've deduced about this place so far is that it's populated primarily by panicky humans who run at the sight of a stranger, and that's also populated by a host of mutants, biomorphs and other abnormalities that aren't any more social.

[Analyzing the situation helps Garrus stay calm, when he wants to be yelling into his comm. No ( Read more... )

Newcomers. That's the second time I've heard that already. People arrive here out of the Black often do they?

[Right, best not to give anything away too early. He'd already slipped up, but it wasn't too late to do a little damage control.]

I havn't looked totally human in a...very long time. [That's sort of the truth. Forever is a long time.] Heavy scarring, reconstructive facial surgery, you get the idea.

Local slang, far as I can tell. But yeah, people're showing up all the damn time in that field.

[An acknowledging noise.] That sucks.

It sucked more when it happened. [There's a smile in his voice, though you wouldn't know it to look at him.]

People just...show up here? And where is here, exactly, besides "Sirens Port"?

[And Shinji lets out an amused snort at that.] I would imagine. What's it from?

Pretty much. Busy doing shit at home then what d'you know, you're here. Siren's Port, Canada. [A pause.] You got a Canada where you're from?

High caliber automatic round in the face, just to the right and down a bit from the orbital bone. Hurt like hell. [Briefly, then he'd passed out.]

Canada...can't say the name rings a bell. That a country or a planet?

[Pause.] And you survived that shit? Fuck. I dropped from two in the chest.

...Country. Earth, Northern end, takes up like half the damn hemisphere.

Well there's more important things in your chest. Heart, lungs, etc. I just got it in the face, missed my eye and brain. You seem pretty sprightly for a guy who took two in the center of mass.

[Garrus pauses and sucks in a surprised breath. Earth? He'd never been to the human homeworld, it wasn't exactly friendly to Turians. But was this even Shepard's Earth? It seemed awfully...primitive.]

Earth, that I know. What year is it?

Grazed you, then? And yeah, it's something weird with this place. [There's a tapping noise-- it's his finger on the side of the NV as he thinks.] Last thing I remember from back home's passing out on the pavement. Then I woke up here with one hell've a headache.

It's 2010, but that don't mean much. We got some people from the damn 1800's hangin' around.

Something weird that prevents death eh? Sounds like a bad science-fiction book; people being pulled from different worlds to a place where death is random...usually to fight to the death I think. Battle Royale style.

It didn't so much graze, but it wasn't a direct hit either. It's hard to explain and I didn't have the best vantage point at the time.

Twenty ten...[He rolls the thought around in his mind. If this were the same universe, he would be extremely far into the past. Human history wasn't a strong suit, but he knew they kept track of centuries...and the 21st was a long way from his.]

Thankfully we don't gotta fight each other so much's the monsters that pop up every night. Not that it stops anyone.

Either way, bullet to the face can't be pleasant. [A pause. He is assuming Garrus is from some time where Canada doesn't exist now.] When was it for you?

Oh it wasn't pleasant, I assure you.[Dryly amused.]

To the best of my knowledge...2185. Not an unimaginable amount but still...enough that the things I know probably aren't even close to being here yet.

I'll take your word on it. [He likes this guys sense of humor.]

Fuck, man, that's a long-ass time. That why you're asking 'bout planets?

Exactly. In my time we've expanded to the stars. For two-hundred years technology has come ahead by leaps and bounds. It's strange to see what it looked like so long ago.

[Strange but somehow fascinating. Mordin would be in heaven.]

Guess so. Two hundred years 'fore my time people were still riding horses and shit. 'Can't imagine how much it bounds ahead after. [It's vaguely interesting, after all.]

What sort've things stand out?

Just about everything really. Clothes, food, buildings, vehicles...although your monsters are a new addition. Not used to seeing them in such numbers much of anywhere. Galaxy's always got a few nasties stashed away...but not usually so many.
