[The feed turns on to reveal a single steel blue eye fixed on the camera lens. The video then is turned away from her, steadily, and films for a precise three seconds a patch of ground two meters away. The camera is then turned back, this time slightly further back, allowing a woman to be revealed, curled blonde hair loose and untidy about her face ( Read more... )

[...ahem.]

That's odd of them to say. An downright lie, actually, unless there's a way out of the city that they haven't told us about yet.

[Goddamn it, Kaz, that text is so small on this little screen and she has no idea how to use the numbers to dial in letters. Besides, her voice gives you the creeps, right? Not that she knows that.]

Perhaps you could explain in further detail.

Of course, but maybe you could tell me something first.

[and here's the tricky part that'll determine if he's going crazy or if this is ruse. he's just about ready to call strangelove out on this but wouldn't it be much better to turn her creation over on its head and demonstrate how many holes there are in its programming?]

Just out of curiosity, do you know someone named Jack?

Jack?

[This is where machines differ from real life. She's still meant to be undercover.]

You'll need to be more specific. Jack is a very common name.

Then feel free to shoot me down if this all sounds unfamiliar to you. It may seem silly, but it's something I need to know before I can answer your own questions.

How did Jack lose his eye?

[What kind of question is that? It doesn't involve the mission strictly, but she can't just go blurting off answers to such things to anyone who asks. Carefully:]

A point four five from an SAA. Any further questions?

[the filters go up and he switches the camera on. sup.

when he speaks, it's urgently and apologetically.]

I apologize for that, but it was wholly necessary to confirm your identity before engaging you further. There are...certain people who've imitated the legendary Boss before in the past; very recently, in fact, so I wanted to make sure that it wasn't happening again. I'm sorry for that, ma'am.

[and then before he has a chance to lose his nerve,] You're in a city known as Siren's Port, somewhere in Canada. Did you make contact with anyone else?

[She isn't entirely sure how to piece together his story entirely. Certain people pretending to be her? And how recently is 'recently'? After her time, yes, but does that mean that this man knows Jack, or that he's from beyond that time? In fact, how does he knows such intimate details from that mission? Jack again?

None of these questions reach her lips.]

There was a man who greeted me here, and I have made contact with others since then, through this radio.

[It seems a bit simple to call it a radio when it can do so much more than that. Communicator?]

Others? Would one of them happen to be our -- mutual friend? [to hell with subtlety. if Snake sees her--] I'm a close friend of Jack's. He's been stuck here for close to a year, but I've only been here for a month. If you're here, he's going to want to speak to you immediately at our base.

If you are indeed a close friend of his, I advise you to look again.

[There is the sound of a knife being drawn, and she presents it before the camera, turning it slowly.]

As you can see, we have already spoken.

[Which means yes, she's been stabbed and is carrying on this conversation as though there's nothing abnormal about it. Field dressings come in pretty useful, obviously.]

[it's a grim sight. words die on his lips and he tries not to stare too owlishly at the blood stained combat knife. he should be unaffected by this and he shouldn't be surprised that this is the only response Snake has given her; ten years of barely suppressed fury and sorrow, all condensed in one violent encounter.

at finality, flatly,] He didn't believe it was you.

You misunderstand, I think. He knew well before he struck out; that is why he did so. My still being alive is evidence enough of that.

In 1964 I mortally wounded him but he did not die. He has been suffering for it ever since.

I've been told the story. It's just that I never expected him to react quite like that. As I've said, you were impersonated by the enemy and he had to take "you" down a second time. This all happened very recently, just a year ago for us. I presumed he would have thought the same of your appearance here.
