I'm asking what would be a suitable way to apologise to someone that cared about him. It's a moot point - he's alive here - but it's a troublesome issue.

Well, firstly it would do well to sound far more apologetic!

My, such cold words... But there is always a way, with soldiers. We are not like civilians... we understand that death is sometimes necessary.

Because the one that cared for him, the one I wish to apologise to, is my father. We are not at war here, yet the man I killed has recently appeared here. Far younger, but... he is understandably unhappy that his future life is cut short so tragically, which affects Father adversely as well.
