To my way of thinking, an individual's life is very much secondary to what he or she might accomplish with it.

One's life merely is. It will end, and, as you said, quickly and easily. What, then, is the point of living for oneself? Better to help to build something that will last.

I don't know why anyone would seek to leave behind a "bad" legacy. No one wishes to be remembered as someone who left behind them only harm.

I will confess that I have indeed encountered such individuals in my career. I suppose they too are motivated by fear of mortality, no less than any other.
