You know, on the one hand I'd like to say I might be getting the hang of this place. On the other, I don't want to jinx it or something stupid like that by causing me to doubt myself. Adjustment's taking longer than I'd like it to, but I'm still out and doing things, and that's what helps. I realized, though, that my morning and nighttime stretches ( Read more... )

[A muffled scoff, hidden behind a hand, perhaps.]

Seriously? You can get used to a place like this?

Adaptability is a staple. It basically means 'not having breakdowns every night,' you know. Like getting used to scalding water.

[A nervous laugh.]

Sheesh, that makes it sound like you keep your hand under hot water to 'get used to it' or something.

That's-

[A pause. A soft echo of an uncomfortable sound comes from Adachi's end of the transmission.]

...That's pretty Machiavellian of you.

Is it? It's just another form of adaptability. Not to say I go around sticking my hand under faucets, but if it's necessary, it's just another thing to withstand.

But you know...you could see that as giving up, too.

No. I don't give up.

But! But look-

Say somebody's forcing you to suck it up and deal with something - now you're saying that you should learn to adapt, right?

[voice] snuffdoll July 11 2010, 21:25:48 UTC
I should learn to adapt anyway.

Right, right, so rather than adapting - why not resist instead?

I mean, saying you should learn to adapt anyway is like saying we should all learn to bend over backwards in case they tell us to.

Wha-

[Flabbergasted silence.]

Why would you say something like that? I'm not saying we shouldn't listen to anybody here, I mean, y'gotta listen to the police. I'm just saying, we should learn to...you know...not get used to putting our hands in scalding water...and stuff. It probably really hurts, and it's bound to kill off some nerves in your hand. You need those nerves, you know, or else you won't be able to do anything by yourself and that's a real pain in the ass.

[Mumble mumble.]

...Guess I'm just surprised that people here could get used to these living conditions just like that.
