[There's disruption in the small flat that Light shares with L - or as the city knows him, Deneuve - this morning. He's more than a little frantic, and the first the video feed sees of him is a streak of black as his NV falls off the table and clatters to the floor. Light is rifling through a pile of papers with both hands, a phone tucked between his shoulder and his ear, and as he speaks into the receiver he drags L's laptop up onto the table and pushes it open.]
Yes, hello? Could you tell me whose number this is? [A pause.] Right. No, thank you.
[He perches on the edge of the single dining chair -- the room is otherwise barren and the paint on the ceiling is pealing. There's an unpleasant looking mark on it in the corner where water has clearly been dripping through. Light taps furiously into the laptop for several minutes on end, and then, looking both furious and disappointed, snaps it shut.]
Updated encryption, that's just what I need. Where the hell are you?
[There's more rifling, as Light looks for his NV, finally spotting it on the floor and picking it up. Light shoves clutter off the desk, sets it up on top of the taptop, and makes sure he doesn't look too ruffled, then the feed clicks off.
About three minutes later, another message is recorded, this time intentional.]
I'll say this all again, since my NV seems to have come on without my knowing. The detective Deneuve is missing. I can't reach his NV, and it's not like him to simply go out for no reason whatsoever. Perhaps this should be a private matter, but I know that in a city like this, quick response can mean the difference between life and death.
I'm asking for help with finding him. I'm afraid I don't have a photograph, since he wanted to keep his identity a secret, but he's six foot tall but walks bent over. Black, untidy hair, pale complexion, really long fingers, pretty much sticks to a longsleeved white shirt and jeans. He never does up his trainers, if he wears them at all, and even then without socks.
[It's so far outside of predictable behaviour that Light seems almost frantic, and realising it he takes a steady breath, bracing himself to serenely continue. He knows it shouldn't worry him so much--it's not like L can really die--except if he does, there's nothing to go back to except his actual death. Does that mean he won't see him again? Was the extra time he had wasted filled with unanswered questions?]
It might be nothing, since it's not like he hasn't caught me off guard with his unpredictability before, but I can't genuinely think of a good reason why he'd be out after the siren, no matter the situation. He was always punctual, and didn't really like to leave me alone if he could avoid it. Any help in getting him back in one piece would be appreciated.
[There's a dog whine off screen, and Light looks away for a moment, then back to the NV.]
Excuse me.
[It clicks off.]
