It seems that it is very popular right now to own and acquire pets. Pet adoption frequently increases in the summer months. On average, there are several reasons given for this: more free time, mild weather, the immediate presence of children in the home. Likely that is not the case for the residents of this city. I suspect companionship and a need for normalcy more than anything else.

[A pause. Almost reluctantly:] I have been looking for the cat. There was no point in making posters, because it did not leave the apartment. And I couldn't remember what its name was. Now I am not sure what would be best to do with it.

I built a lego city, bigger than before. The cat must have gotten lost. It's very still, and its eyes are open. I picked up one of its feet. It felt cold. Hard, maybe, too--more solid. Eventually it will get soft, but it hasn't reached that stage yet. Its death was probably recent, since there are very few signs of initial purification putrification. Neglect, probably. I had a robot that required batteries. I removed them when it got boring. There was a similar sense of cold. I have never seen a dead animal before, in person. Videos and pictures.

[Another pause, then a long breath, nearly a sigh.] I suppose you throw them away, when they're dead. If anyone would like the cat, they can have it. Or it can remain, perhaps. It isn't mine, but that doesn't matter. The cat will need to be removed from the city first. Animal decomposition typically occurs at a faster rate than human decomposition, though without the influence of several key factors, it may be slowed. Or it may attract insects to the apartment. I will see what happens.

There have been many new arrivals, and very few murders. I suppose that's good, from a certain standpoint. Although it seems that most people come from worlds accustomed to a level of violence. Cats can't write wills--most cats. I have never thought of writing one. Do most people come from violent circumstances? Do most have a will drawn up?

[A significantly longer pause. Uncomfortable.] I've never killed anything before. I have played all my games. I am not interested in much else. The cat is in the way of progress, and needs to be removed, If it is wanted, it can be given away.

[Private to Mello]
You can clean up the cat. Give it to anyone who is interested in it. That's all.
