It's things like that which prove why dogs are man's best friend. You won't hear about a cat dragging anyone to safety.

It's also nice to see something positive in the news around here. We could do with a few more good stories.

You're telling me! Reminds me of this movie I saw when I was like, five. Big Red. Man, after that, I wanted an Irish Setter just like that Red for years.

I never did get that dog.

Now that's a damn shame. I think every kid should have a dog once in their life. Setters are good ones, too.

Oh, we had the family dog when I was little! Still, he was kind of old and didn't do too many exciting things.

He was still the best friend a boy could have, though, I'll admit. Right next to Lil' Peanut.

Hardly surprising. I find they're often so faithful.

Yeah, they are. They're good animals. Don't let anyone ever tell you any dog is naturally mean, because it's just not true. They have to be turned that way.

Did you have a dog?

Cats are fine. I don't have anything against them, but I'd never have one as a pet.

I got one as a pet, and one as a best friend. So I'm a little biased.

...Aaaand my boss keeps cats in the office.

One as a best friend?

Sounds like you're pretty much surrounded by them.

Maybe they would, if they were a little bigger.

Or the person was made of fish and catnip.

I'd be more worried about what the cat planned to do with the person afterward then.

But with dogs you don't even need to bribe them. If you've been a good person to them, they'll come through for you when you need them.

Dogs are animals that grow easily attached. Pack animals, so to speak.

Not a bad way to be, if you ask me.

It's instinct for dogs to protect their pack and those they perceive are part of it.

Exactly. And how many other animals bond that closely with people? Dogs are just good creatures all around.

Not too many animals bond the ways dogs do, though wolves can be a close second. If you know how to control them, that is.

I'm afraid I'm not much for wolves.
