-- Mmm... that looked like a start! Okay, now - [ the woman's voice, heavily Mexican and sounding very eager, is interrupted by a few clicks and then successive beep beep beep, getting louder. ] No no no! Calm down, amigo, I just want to see the movies! Come on, come on, it's not asking for much, I don't think --

If I could tell you how much the train to New York was, I wouldn't still be here to do it. [There's a thread of amusement in his tone, but his voice is much more serious when he adds, a moment later:] Basically, you're stuck.

Everybody's saying that, amigo! And that's really bringing down the mood... Are you saying those guys in the baseball diamond weren't kidding around? [ because she was only half-listening... ]

[There's the sound of a soft sigh.] If anyone has figured a way outta this joint, they certainly haven't stuck around long enough to share it with the rest of us. It's a lot more complicated than just hopping the next train.

[ she sounds much more frustrated than panicky, at least. ]

But finding something to do is a good place to start; you'll need the money.

[ a pause; of course, Maria's only ever really done one thing her entire life. Now that she's enlisted with the Gandors, is she even allowed to take on other jobs? She wasn't a freelancer anymore. In her head, that was the only troubling thing about the sudden move. It wasn't like she was leaving any family or friends or even precious memories behind. [There is a pause. Firo has noticed the exchange between Claire and this girl and while he didn't watch it all the way through, he saw enough to hear her call him 'Vino' without being introduced. But to ask about it...
...Well, letting things he's curious about lie has never been his strong point.] By the way, I noticed you talking to Vino. You know him?

Of course I know Vino! He's real famous in my line of work, you know! I even got to meet him last year in person, but it didn't work out so great. [ Maria's face turns into a bit of a pout for a second at that particular memory, but she shakes it off momentarily. ] Oh, and I think he's a friend of my boss, too.

[That Vino is famous in her line of work could mean a few things (the law being one of them)--but if that guy is friends with this gal's boss, Firo's pretty confident in guessing what that work isn't.] I'm just surprised to find someone else who knew of him before coming here. As far as I know, there aren't many who do.

[ so she says with a cheeky grin. Were she more on top of things, she'd probably take that fact into account and try not to mention her "job" so much, but that is exactly the sort of thing she never pays attention to (and subsequently gets in trouble for.) ]
You know, he said it was the year 2012, amigo! I bet that's why people haven't heard of him. But - you have! So you must not be from the future, either.
