I don't think I can get into the holiday spirit here. Not like I did back home, anyway.

How was it like, celebrating Christmas in your home?

It was what every other family did on our street. We were more into the decorating and Christmas spirit than the actual religious part of it. [ She'd noticed that some people were very religious about Christmas here. ]

[ Gently, with understanding: ] Were you close to them? Your family, I mean.

Yeah. Family's everything, after all. That's what my mom used to say.

Hmm...have you made a lot of new friends here in the city yet?

I think so. [ Friend was such a weird term, though. She doesn't want to get too attached to people who could leave suddenly. ]

More than I thought I would have when I first got here.

So, then, what are your plans for this coming Christmas?

I'm...not really sure. I might be just visiting with my uncle. Nothing too exciting.

Perhaps when the time comes to open your gifts, you'll manage to find some excitement. Though, personally speaking, I find preparing gifts for others is rather entertaining in itself. You never know how the recipient will react.

[ Then again, that might just apply to those receiving her more questionable gifts. ]

That's true. It's hard to tell how people will react when you barely know them.
