[ She hadn't meant to leave the NV open, but open she did, though it's lying face down, so have the lovely image of the porch floorboards. That's oak - innit pretty? Muffled as it is, the sound of two girls talking is overheard; one amused, the other more mellow. ]
"I don't know what you were talking about, that water was far from freezing."

[He's decidedly displeased to hear this argument over the network. Is this what Ella has to deal with every day? He's not surprised, actually, but that doesn't mean he has to like it. He's about to say something, but then Hattie's words register. Boyfriend? Wait, what the hell?! Excuse him. He needs to gather the pieces of his brain and put them back together. He'll be back in a minute.]

[It takes him a few minutes to calm down his anger -- and, quite honestly, bafflement -- to the point where he feels composed enough to reply. Very flat, very unamused, but not giving off any ammunition in his demeanour.]

Hardly makes it any better, but it's small consolation. [Very small consolation. Especially since it's been publicly aired and people who don't know any better could come to believe it.]
And why is she calling me Toushirou? [She is not allowed.]

You have to remember, Hattie's very ... petty. If she can get under your skin, she's going to make every attempt to do it.
To be completely honest, what she does and says? Doesn't bother me. [ People who accidentally give her commands bother her more than Hattie's childishness. ]
She's a victim of poor upbringing, no more and no less. Trying to correct that is an uphill battle.

[He wants to say "Stop lecturing me," or "Quit excusing her behaviour, damn it." But those are orders and he's not mean or thoughtless.] But such things can be corrected. [That adorable screaming brat you saw one time, Ella? He used to be even worse than that. And he quit because people stopped enabling him so much.]
What happened, anyway?

[ She sits up and gives the NV her full attention, folding the wet towel absently. ]
What happened with what and when?
