[Running a special protocol in the background, Light tries to track everyone who accesses this post, in an effort to control the observation to only people who are truly newcomers. It may not work, but the very fact that he's watching makes him feel as though he may learn something.

Be grateful, Big Boss, this is finally a move that he's making ( Read more... )

[Ah, BB approves by not commenting to this at all. What he wants Light to do is a. figure out the ability thing in hopes that it gets them closer to finding a way out, b. leaving the people he cares for alone, such as Edgeworth. Maybe if he someday finds out where he's hiding that note, if he's not just bluffing --]

When are you free?

When do you want me to be free? Obviously I'm busy today, since compiling this list may take a while. I'll forward it to you, incidentally, if you're interested.

That's fine.

Well, it's not urgent or anything, but I wanted to talk to you. [About a certain Alexander.]

Ah yes, of course. I'd suggest dinner, but I don't think I can afford it before my next paycheck.

I'll pay. Money's not really an issue. Usual place?

Sounds good to me. I'll see you there when I get off work.

Right.

[He knows Light's work schedule. He's waiting in the usual cafe, the usual table, and the according district in the evening, playing around with his NV. There's already two glasses of water.]

[Light is there a little late, looking exhausted after a day spent working solidly. He sits down before he speaks.]

Jack. You wanted to speak to me?

[Jack doesn't look up at once, still fumbling with his device -- after a few more seconds, he turns it around in his hands, showing the screen to Light, displaying a photo.

It's 'Alexander', in front of a confectionary store during the Darkness. It's only his profile, and you don't get a very good look on his face...but his posture and clothes look similar to L, even if he appears a little more filthy than the famous detective, and taller. His black hair, too, is just as unkempt, but somewhat longer.]

Do they all look like that? If so, I can understand if they don't want to show their faces publicly.

[Light is undoubtedly a little startled. This is B -- yes, he seems similar, though the way that Light saw him last was covered with burns. He considers the screen quietly, glancing up at Jack, then back down at the camera.

He looks just like L does. Or rather, Deneuve, Ryuzaki, Eraldo Coil. But this is most certainly B. Beyond Birthday, or Rue Ryuzaki, one of L's successors, and a failure. Not quite the World's Greatest Criminal that he had wanted to become. Yet, this B is uninjured, so it must be that hecame from before that point.]

It all makes so much more sense now. This is B, Jack. B, like L and M and N. He was killed by Kira in my world.

[He looks up.]

And yes, they're all like that. Quirky.

[He looks at light for a few more moments, waiting if there's anything more... apparently not. But if he was with them, why would he be an ally? He turns the NV back, looking at the picture himself again.]

So it's true that he is a detective...a brilliant one at that, I guess. Suppose he can afford to be eccentric, then.

[Looks up.]

If he's one of them, why do you have me help him? Call him a 'possible ally'?

Because B is L's backup, and resentful of him. He could not take the position until L was dead, after all. So he left the institute where he was being trained. I don't know absolutely what he did -- information was scarce about L's childhood.

He is exceedingly intelligent, though -- there were a series of locked room murders he was involved with in Los Angeles, which seemed completely unsolveable. He worked alongside a woman named Naomi Misora during that time; an agent of the FBI.

I would rather have B on my side than L's, that is all. I'm certain his competitiveness would hold true even here, and his more intimate knowledge of L himself.. I mean look -- he even copies L. The lust for sweet things, the angle he stands at, the way he's cut his hair. It's not perfect, but it's close if you extrapolate that he hasn't seen him for years. They could almost be brothers.

We need him to get home. Can you accept that, Jack?

[Still looking at the picture even if Light explains this.]

...I suppose. I'll look after him for a while, then, if you think he'd be willing to help...not only to keep Deneuve, Near and Mello away from you, but also to figure out how to return home...

[He sounds distant as he says this, feeling down and not particularly in the mood to argue, and he tries to ignore this feeling he's been having since a few days -- something bad was about to happen. You didn't need some weird ability to be able to tell.

And as irony has it, he would indeed return home very soon, just not in the way he'd expect. Completely unaware that 'returning home' would do him more harm than good, but you can't run from fate.]

But you need to tell him this yourself. I don't know how he'd react to your true identity, though. But that's not for me to worry about.

I don't plan to tell him who I am. His antagonistic relationship with L means that he will be upset if the person who killed him has managed to outwit L also. Admitting that I am Kira, when I have told him that Kira was responsible for his death -- it is a bad idea, Jack.

[He reaches across the table, taking the other man's hand. He looks upset - vulnerable.]

We'll get home, I promise.

[No doubt. He's not one to give up so easily; if Big Boss is known for anything, it's his stubborness and how it is exactly that stubborness that leads to his demise. The truly sad thing though is that he actually finds comforts in Light's gesture; as much as he despises him, but there's no one else right now.

And he's too emotionally involved in this to quit. Bad habit, bad habit. Smoking will kill you. So would a bullet.

But there was something that makes him pause, momentarily.]

You killed him? Why?

[Light withdraws his hand, slowly.]

Even the best people in the world sometimes grow impatient, crossing lines they shouldn't to achieve what they feel they must, even when those things are morally wrong. Both B and L, in their pursuit of justice, have done things that cannot be forgiven and gotten away with them, thanks to their anonymity.

It blinds you -- the desire to make the world a better place makes it easy for you to forget yourself in the meantime.
