'Going into it' did you say?

Yes. All Abhorsens have the ability to do so.

For what purpose?

Well...there are many reasons we go into Death. Mostly, though, it's to ensure that spirits are on their way to a final rest. There are always necromancers ready to raise the dead. It's our duty to stop them.

And you yourself, are you alive?

Yes. An Abhorsen can leave their body whenever they choose, but if they tarry in Death too long, they won't be able to return. The further one goes into Death, the more dangerous it becomes and it's more difficult to find your way back to Life.

Is this something that you do by choice or, in a sense, a 'destiny'?

I'm not sure what you mean by "destiny", but we do it because it's in our bloodline. [She finds herself shrugging. To her, this is all perfectly normal, with no sense of mystery or destiny about it.]

[ Helen nods. To her that's... sort of destiny ] Do you enjoy it?

Do I enjoy it? Well...I enjoy in the sense that it allows me to help others, but...it wasn't something I'd truly wanted at first. It's a very difficult and wearying life.

But you do so regardless because of the duty. You do a good job.

You will be if you have faith in it.

Thank you.
