[ Clark gets straight down to business when the video feed starts up. ]
This is going to sound like a really odd request no matter how I put it, and the explanation is almost as weird as the rest of it, but here goes nothing anyway. I need clothes--small people's clothes. Like...kid's clothes, for someone about three foot tall, say.
I know there's

[ And then her eyebrows go up in blatant amusement as she grins at him. ]
Afraid you'll lose your reputation as a fearless warrior, Smallville?

[ And then she flicks the feed to private. ]
Well, that's always a good line to start a conversation with.

And a sleeper sofa is a great plan.

[Private. Hard swallow.]
Might as well get it over with.
You know how I said it was just going to be one night?
Reply
No kidding. Who knows who the next person to need the couch will be. One spare bed or sleeper plus the couch might make life livable. Or a futon. something.

How long. Exactly.

Uh...
Well that's just it, I don't know how long it's going to be. The kid's still in a lot of shock right now, and he's not the only one I have to convince on the legitimacy of boarding houses.

Who else.

Gingham?

[ Oh, this subject. Touchy. ]

[ This is Lois' unreadable face. ]
I see. He's still involved in this?

[ When she looks at him like that he isn't sure whether he loves her more or is utterly terrified of her. ]
This is sort of... I might be picking up the pieces of his mess. Talk about it when you get home?
Reply
Yes. And we are talking about it.

[ And there's an opening of a door, then a Lois walking through it, and then a closing of that door. ]
Here.
[ She tosses the requested catalog his way, because they really do need that spare. ]

We can argue, but keep it down; he's finally asleep.
[ And oh look, he's already made Lois a hot drink, which he offers to her as he walks over. ]
Reply
Right. So how did this get dropped on your lap, again? For three weeks, not overnight like you said.
[ She takes the hot drink with more gratefulness than she'd like to admit. ]

He wouldn't go, Lois. The police woman was there to take him to the boarding house, and he held on to my leg and begged me to let him stay. He was terrified.
Jason might have been involved. From what I hear his relationship with the system wasn't that great either, and he's disillusioned. That's why he brought the kid to us in the first place.

Her entire look softens, and she glances again towards where he was sleeping. Well shit. ]
Don't have to tell me--I really need to do a series on that some day, here or at home, one of-- no, both of them--anyway. Hell.
I'm sorry, Clark. I wasn't really thinking.

[ And Clark smiles, steps toward her, leaning down to kiss her forehead, then meeting her eyes. ]
Thank you. For putting up with my stupid whims, and the random stuff that just seems to follow me around. And for not letting me just get away with it. Sometimes I'm the one that's not thinking.

Hey, I've had the job of not letting you get away with stupid things for six years. I'm going to need a pension at some point.
Oh, you noticed? [ And the sardonic raised eyebrow returns. ]
Reply
He's giving her that 'we need to talk' look. ]
