[A straight face stilled for a moment. He's not quite vacant nor is he expressionless, though it comes off that way.]I have not been here long, but I have come to realize that the Great Revelation has not happened in all of your worlds. I am vampire and I am also one of the oldest where I come from -- was. I was one. I mean no harm to anyone. ( Read more... )

Some people see this place as a chance to start over.

I am undeserving of such a gift.

The people you've hurt... Are any of them here?

No-- Yes. One. But he does not see it that way. I offered. A rarity in our kind. Vampires rarely ask.

Sounds like you've been a pretty decent guy. At least like someone who deserves to be forgiven when he repents.

My past is too dark. I am unnatural and do not deserve it.

I dunno the meaning of "unnatural" when it comes to a place like this, that defies all the universal laws I've ever heard of. And I dunno if you've got some belief in another power that decides what you "deserve".

But your past isn't here, right? There's no undoing it. Beating yourself up over it or even dying over it doesn't undo any of that. I guess that's our curse.

But that doesn't change the opportunities here. The lives we led before are over. Deserved or undeserved, today's another day to do something totally different. Doesn't it seem like holding onto the guilt of yesterday is only gonna distract you from the good you can do today?

You bring up valid points. However what good can be found here? These companies? The deaths that go by unnoticed?

There's a whole city full of people who need protection from those companies, and most of them don't even know it. Even if death's all over the place, you can still prevent it in the future.

And if you're tired of fighting... You said you lived for two thousand years, right? You've probably mastered hundreds of skills in that time. There's a lot you can teach people here.

My skills require superspeed at least. To be taught.

Not so rare around here.

Also seems like there're a lot of younger vampires around who could use some general guidance.

I have met one. But I do not think like a vampire any more.

How's that? The way the others think.

Most relish know their loss of humanity. I mourn mine. Something happens when you are made. The world is made open to you. Death is no longer a limit. It shadows all reason, and you develop a bloodlust. Vampires thrive on the destruction we cause, the lack of impulse control. There is no evolution.

Not to contradict the expert, but that hasn't been my experience. Some, yeah. I've been called livestock by a vampire before. Even just a few days ago...

[Raphael. Unpleasant story. Nevermind, he shrugs it off.]

- But others have been my friends. Real loyal and caring friends who value all life

I am not saying it is not possible. I am proof that is. But it takes work. At least for kind of vampire. The need to kill is a strong one.
